This class is designed to access multiple threads at once such as greater range of motion and articulation, isolated and momentum-driven movement forms, rhythmic and kinesthetic intelligence, sense of scale, ascent and descent, injury prevention, alignment, personal and musical expression, and dancing that supports a balanced square orientation over a vertical axis while traversing through space, and shifting off center, in a mode that reflects a play between athleticism, performance, and a particular disposition.

Class will be taught by Kayvon Pourazar on April 16 & 18. This class will focus on alignment, weight, clarity of momentum, and breath. Using influences from Chi Gong, Alexander, yoga, modern and postmodern constructs to release the joints, connect to the floor, lengthen the spine, activate the senses and warm the body. We continue the exploration in the second half through a combination of improvisation, phrase material and other choreographic structures to expand the experience of dancing.

Tiredness

Tiredness is the title of the research that I’m doing and it is about how people lives in big cities and how it relates with the inhabited space.
I have an image for Tiredness: someone is sitting on the subway, her eyes are not quite closed and her head is leaning on the glass. She looks through the window to all these people moving during the rush hour. She is just leaning, looking the stations pass and unable to move; only contemplating. Sometimes I have this sensation about myself. The body doesn’t want to move but it is supposed to do it.
When I arrived to NY, one of the first impressions I had was that everything was too much: buildings, kinds of food, infrastructure, people leaving and arriving, clothes, theatre plays, work, languages, traffic, sizes, proportions, money, etc. You have to keep moving to be here. It is the city that never sleeps and though most of the people seem to be really tired. That’s the reason -I think- for which the people uses the time to get from one place to another to get some rest.
Closing your eyes can be like consolation, or like consciously disappearing, a way to get some relief. It is a time for not having to act or to think. In that sense, Tiredness is the rebellion of the body when it has reached its limits.
For me, Tiredness is a symptom of a body collapsing under the structure of life in big cities; it is a physical and rebellious response to the overwhelming activity, the production and exploitation in modern urban areas.
I really like the title: TIREDNESS. I think I wouldn’t find a better one, no one wants to be tired and it’s impossible not to be. The body gets tire, the ideas wear out and nothing moves but everything is still about to happen.

Coming from a visual art background, dancemaker Rebecca Bryant combines pre-determined and extemporaneous movement with text, video, sound, and objects to address current societal phenomena. In addition to solo work, she performs with Lower Left Performance Collective (dance/theater) and the Past Modern Performance Duo (dance/percussion/new media), and has danced with renowned and emerging choreographers including Nina Martin, Shelley Senter, Wally Cardona, Kim Epifano, Victoria Marks, Lionel Popkin, Liam Clancy, Marianne Kim, Randé Dorn, and Manuelito Biag. Bryant has performed across the US and in Canada, Mexico, Argentina, Spain, Germany, Hungary, Romania, Denmark, Norway, and Sweden, with projects supported by multiple residencies. Bryant currently resides in West Lafayette, Indiana where she is Assistant Professor of Dance at Purdue University.

Michal Samama is a New York Live Arts Fresh Tracks 2012-2013 Artist-in-Residence and a Movement Research 2011-2013 Artist-in-Residence. She was recently awarded a New Dance Alliance LiftOff Residency and participated in The Field Artist Residency. Since arriving to NYC in 2010, her work has been presented at Dixon Place, Movement Research at the Judson Church, Joyce SoHo, Chez Bushwick, Priska C. Juschka Gallery, First Street Green, Vaudeville Park, and the 92nd St Y. In Berlin she performed at the Home Sweet Home Festival and the Grimmuseum. In Israel her work has been shown in Suzanne Dellal Center, Tmuna Theater, Tzavta Theater, and more.

Inbal Hever is a mezzo soprano whose repertoire ranges from baroque to contemporary classical music. She has performed as a soloist in Europe, Israel, and, recently, New York.

This is the second time that Ann Sofie Clemmensen and Tammy Carrasco have collaborated together. In MODE they are revisiting movement material that they generated in their former collaboration (a group work). In reshaping the material into a duet, they are exploring how their relationship to the movements are changing, as the rearrangement of order, time, and intent solidifies the former into something new.

Ann Sofie Clemmensen is an emerging Danish choreographer. She will graduate with an MFA in Dance from Ohio State University in May 2013. Tammy Carrasco is a first year MFA student in the Ohio State University dance department of dance.

Kate Martel grew up in Massachusetts and Rhode Island. Currently based in Brooklyn, NY, she has danced in NYC since 2002. A member of Laura Peterson Choreography since 2007, Kate has performed dances by Luis Lara Malvacias, Juliette Mapp, David Hurwith, Sarah White-Ayon, and Nora Stephens. Abandoned classrooms, rooftops, blackbox theaters, and lofts have been homes to her choreographic experiments (St. Cecilia’s, Rooftop Dance, Dixon Place, and Women in Motion). She has taught nationally, internationally, and is currently on faculty at Western Connecticut State University. Having earned her B.A. in Dance from Goucher College, Kate is pursuing her M.F.A. at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. She is also participating in the Alexander Technique Teacher Training Course at Balance Arts Center. Big thanks, Whitney, for your collaboration!

Kanassu means ‘the craziest’ in Wolof language. Through dance and poetry, Kanassu denounces some of the evils found in African society, evils that hinder Africa.

Kanassu
He walks the streets, mind-wandering such as the poet
He denounces the evils of the society, such as the politician
Everywhere he sounds the alarm, such as the fireman
He keeps moving forward when everyone seems to stop
He wants, such as the great men, to transform the world.
But he is called Kanassu
Such as the poet and the politician
Such as the fireman and the great men
Who then is the fool among the fools?
He is in the streets, in offices
He is in the trash, in laboratories
Sometimes visible, sometimes invisible
You, me, all of us are Kanassu
The negligent and the careless
The pretentious and the crooks
The liars and the irresponsibles
The corrupted and the greedy
Intolerant religious and bellicose politicians
Are all Kanassu
Is it not the fools who hold the reins of the world?

Papa Sy is a dancer, a choreographer, and a dance teacher from Senegal. After professional dance training in Senegal’s national dance academies, Papa Sy joined Germain Acogny’s Ecole des Sables and the internationally known Jant-Bi dance company. Working at Ecole des Sables opened Papa Sy’s artistic spirit. He founded the Pasytef Ballet-Theatre de Dalifort dance company as well as the Pasy Dance School out of a passion for sharing his knowledge with young dancers and contributing to their artistic education. Papa Sy now lives in New York City and continues teaching dance classes to children as well as adults at Cumbe Diaspora Dance Center.

Hurricanes, transit strikes, planned and unplanned explosions, occupations… Bike lanes, bus lanes, protest pens, command centers… Pedestrian zones, redevelopment zones, disaster zones… How is the landscape of our city changing and what are the possibilities for creative response? Looking at the shifting social, economic, and literal topography of our city through the frame of transformative events and policy decisions, we ask the question: what is the role of artists, activists, and all citizens in conceiving, creating, and defending (a notion of) public space? And conversely, what is the role of public space as a partner in creative expression and action? luciana achugar, Randy Martin, Jenny Romaine, and Niegel Smith reflect on our shifting urban landscape and offer opportunities to imagine how we might enact our city in the future.

We’ll look at different ways of approaching ‘dance technique’… energy systems, physical systems, architectural-object-spatial relationships, contact and non-contact partner and solo improvisations. I take my current somatic, dance, and performance interests and apply them to a movement practice. A maximally informed approach to dancing. A space of respectful, creative permission for everyone’s body. A time to really let things move in all senses of the word… in relationship within and beyond oneself. Structure = warm-up leads to choreographed phrase work.

Movement Practice
The class will begin with an anatomy focused warm-up, drawn from both traditional and recent techniques, aiming to align and re-pattern the energy flow in the body in order to find support from the floor and our connection into space. We will begin with simple movements, improvisation scores, exercises, and sequences gradually building in complexity. We will learn movement material, some from Jasperse’s work and some created for these explorations. Our goal will be to integrate energetic patterning explored in the first portion of class and to play with different manners of experiencing and embodying the choreographic material.

Forsythe Improv and Phrase Workshop
Long time Forsythe dancer Elizabeth Corbett guides an exploration into the working methodologies inspired by the creative processes of William Forsythe. In this workshop dancers explore and develop improvisation approaches and deconstruction of Forsythe’s phrase work toward accessing the inner logic and unfolding mechanisms in the work.

Improvisation as a practice, and particularly the rich history of Contact Improvisation, has spread throughout the world in various permutations and with multiple offshoots, evolutions, hybrids, specializations, etc. With improvisation in some form or another as a now ubiquitous presence in much of contemporary dance, how are people grappling with the various practices of improvisation in the context of contemporary performance?
How do we situate our dancing in the larger world? Is it performance? Practice? Who is it for and how does it serve and/or inspire us and others? What tools and materials are we using — and toward what ends?

This workshop addresses the necessity for a practice that generates language to support one’s work and the work of others. We will find ways to create that language in a peer setting through sharing, seeing, dialoguing, and creative writing exercises. In this workshop, 4-5 students show up to 20 min. of work (live or video), and the class discusses the work and investigates the process of discussion as well. We’ll look at different ways of approaching ‘dance technique’… energy systems, physical systems, architectural-object-spatial relationships, contact and non-contact partner and solo improvisations. I take my current somatic, dance, and performance interests and apply them to a movement practice. A maximally informed approach to dancing. A space of respectful, creative permission for everyone’s body. A time to really let things move in all senses of the word… in relationship within and beyond oneself. Structure = warm-up leads to choreographed phrase work.

Movement Practice
The class will begin with an anatomy focused warm-up, drawn from both traditional and recent techniques, aiming to align and re-pattern the energy flow in the body in order to find support from the floor and our connection into space. We will begin with simple movements, improvisation scores, exercises, and sequences gradually building in complexity. We will learn movement material, some from Jasperse’s work and some created for these explorations. Our goal will be to integrate energetic patterning explored in the first portion of class and to play with different manners of experiencing and embodying the choreographic material.

Taking the following as an ambitious base, we’ll try out various configurations in which we might think-act together what a community choreography could be, understanding the idea of community not in terms of difference from other groups but in terms of a specific way of being together.
Ten statements on collective practice*
1. members of the group participate with their entire bodies, experiences and thoughts
2. each member is responsible for what she shares within the group
3. each member is responsible for the way she processes what is shared within the group
4. short-cut negotiations
5. general agreement is not desirable
6. create a common that is based on individual experience
7. practitioners should focus on their own activity rather than on the general composition
8. only the practitioners themselves can evaluate their own activity
9. leave space for individuals to resist the group dynamics

International Dance Dialogues (IDD)
Created and Curated by Janet Panetta
International Dance Dialogues (IDD) is a program designed to address the need for New York’s developing dance artists to have meaningful interchange with their counterparts and potential mentors from Eastern and Western Europe. While New York artists are able to see the performances of larger companies like Pina Bausch’s Tanztheater Wuppertal, our artists are rarely able to interact with the creators and performers from these companies in an intimate setting. In addition, lesser-known yet prize-winning and critically-acclaimed European artists do not come to New York to perform due to lack of name recognition, funding and suitable venues; again, access to these artists is very rare for New York dancers and choreographers. IDD provides a venue where substantive professional exchange and even friendships develop, so that significant and often ongoing connections are created.

Alice Chauchat, born 1977 in Saint-Etienne (FR), lives and works in Berlin and Paris as choreographer, performer and teacher/lecturer. Studied in the Conservatoire National Superieur de Musique (Lyon) and at P.A.R.T.S. (Brussels). She works most in collaborative set-ups, developing numerous choreographic projects and platforms for knowledge production and exchange in the performing arts (everybodystoolbox.net, pa-f.net, specialissue.eu etc.). 2010-2012 she was part of the artistic co-direction for Les Laboratoires d’Aubervilliers, a center for artistic research in the Parisian suburbs.

The Nature, real demons don’t need us to carry out their acts of ill will – in fact, it is the height of vanity to suppose that we human beings are in any way necessary for them.

Movement Research and Mårten Spångberg invites you to the workshop presentation The Nature, a dance for three women, beautiful music, objects and some phantastical movements. The workshop focused on dance that is, that exists on its own terms, that appears to express not human consciousness but dance plain and simple. The Nature is a dance organized through methods of breaking with anticipation, dramaturgy and interpretation aiming at a dance that shows up. Not really funny or mind blowing but you know just a dance.

This small society has during a few weeks channelled demons in order to become obsessed. In any particular order Linda Blair, Balanchine, Kubelka, Chakra breathing, disco, Dennis Hopper, Kraken – the giant squid, Sutter Cane, Coke Zero and others has been called in order to enter shady, out of focus landscapes, blurry color fields, cosmic minefields and the atomic swing. And those places were kind enough to lend us some dances, come and have a look.

Participant Bios:

MÃ¥rten SpÃ¥ngberg is an internationally recognized choreographer working through a wide variety of expressions investigated through choreographies and dance. Alongside dances and choreographies he has worked closely with architecture and spatial practices as well as with education, publishing, and writing. His last book Spangbergianism appeared in 2011, followed by a new volume this spring. As performance maker, his work stretches from collective non-skilled dance performances in the 90s to constipated conceptual work in the early 00’s, to large scale choreographies with Christine De Smedt, a Steve Paxton inspired solo called Powered by Emotion (in NY 2008 and 2012), from point-shoe work to a Rite of Spring that is really messy, some activist dance, and later choreographies that perhaps best could be described as dances that mind their own business but with a smile.

Nicole Daunic is a dancer, PhD candidate (ABD) in the department of Performance Studies at New York University, and co-editor of Critical Correspondence living in Brooklyn, NY.

Susanne Grau is a dancer from Cologne.

Madeline Hollander is a dancer and choreographer from Los Angeles active in New York.

EXPRESS TRAIN TO STATES OF GRACE: CI, contemplation, and composition
Like scaling Mt Everest, States of Grace is a pinnacle — elusive, ever-present, dangerous, fantasized, in our minds. And our bodies. “States of Grace” is what can happen when all the balls are in the air at once: solo dancing, contact improvisation, non-CI improvisation, contemplation, composition, listening, performance/art, mystery, and humanity. Many questions. Embodied research. Can we move easily between solo, contact improvisation, group work, somatic sources and impulses, and compositional awareness? What does this make? Only way to discover is to do it and find out. The Underscore on Sunday is the culminating vehicle for our discoveries. Participants should have previous experience with Contact Improvisation.

The Underscore is a long jamming/contact/improvisation/composition score that Nancy has been developing since the early 1990s as a framework for dance improvisation research. It guides dancers through a series of “changing states” — from solo relaxation and sensitizing to gravity and support, through group circulation and interaction, contact improvisation engagements, opening out to full group improvisation, and back to rest and reflection. Previous experience with Contact Improvisation and attendance at the talk is required for participation in the Underscore practice.

Improvisation as a practice, and particularly the rich history of Contact Improvisation, has spread throughout the world in various permutations and with multiple offshoots, evolutions, hybrids, specializations, etc. With improvisation in some form or another as a now ubiquitous presence in much of contemporary dance, how are people grappling with the various practices of improvisation in the context of contemporary performance?
How do we situate our dancing in the larger world? Is it performance? Practice? Who is it for and how does it serve and/or inspire us and others? What tools and materials are we using — and toward what ends?

Beauty, awkwardness, form, strength, weakness. Intended to be both laboratory and class, we will delve into the design of the body and its potential within a given moment. Through open practices, stretch and placement, technique studies, and movement phrases, habits will be discovered, challenged, and seen through a new lens. A concentration on the forces through the legs will lead to finding the range in separate body parts and ways to use your weight into the floor. My hope is for you to feel present and challenged and to leave class with a few answers and many more questions.
