Featuring works by Joanna Kotze**, Gillian Walsh, Sophia Cleary and Zach Fuller

FIND YOURSELF HERE: Trio B – Judson (Excerpt)

Choreography: Joanna Kotze in collaboration with the performers

Performers: Molly Lieber, Stuart Singer, Zachary Fabri

Video: Zachary Fabri

Music: The Mercury Program

FIND YOURSELF HERE: Trio B – Judson is the second in a series of trios that will play a role in the creation of an evening-length work: FIND YOURSELF HERE. Each trio consists of two dancers and a visual artist and is the result of a short, intensive time of collaboration. The trios are intended as work-in-progress investigations into the rigors of movement and are connected to specific spaces. FIND YOURSELF HERE: Trio B – Judson was developed in residence at the Baryshnikov Arts Center and at Djerassi; Trio B also received support from a Yellow House Educational Stipend and contributions from individual donors: Kimberly Allen, Sharon Brownfield and Rick Lent, Mavourneen Graham, Judy and Derek Kotze, Nancy K. Miller and Sandy Petrey, Nancy Rockwell, and Elena Williams.

This work was also made possible, in part, through The Movement Research Artist-in-Residence Program, funded, in part, by the Jerome Foundation and the Davis/Dauray Family Fund.

Video Clips from Movement Research at the Judson Church 12-9-13

Featuring works by Effie Bowen, Salva Sanchis and Michelle Boulé

Big Boys Don’t Do That

By Effie Bowen

With Marian Ekweogwu, Zari Esaian, Nicholas Jackson, Jen Rosenblit

Music by Kate Bush, hollywaxwing, NPR

Angle

Choreography and dance: Salva Sanchis

Music: György Ligeti, John Cage, Luciano Berio, Jo Kondo and Keiko Harada

Salva will dance an excerpt from his solo Angle (2012). It is set to short piano solo pieces by György Ligeti, John Cage, Luciano Berio, Jo Kondo and Keiko Harada, which normally are performed live by pianist Yutaka Oya. Tonight Salva will use recorded music. Angle is a dance piece about the perception of dance. Its title refers specifically to the way we look at dance. As we all know, dance, just like music, doesn’t stand alone. It needs an audience to fulfill its purpose, and the audience brings in as much baggage as the artist to that relation.

White

Choreography by Michelle Boulé in collaboration with the performers

Performances by Lauren Bakst, Michelle Boulé, Lindsay Clark

Costumes by Reid Bartelme

Sound by Okkyung Lee and Samantha Sang, with design assistance from Carmine Covelli

Lighting by Natalie Robin

This project was made possible, in part, through the Movement Research Artist-in-Residence Program, funded, in part, by the Mertz Gilmore Foundation, the Davis/Dauray Family Fund and by public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council.

technical (and) improvisation work
We’ll try to improve the fluidity of our actions by 1) establishing a purposeful and clear relation with the floor, and 2) integrating all parts of the body in action. The kind of movement I am interested in is first functional, then expressive as a consequence. In these sessions we will try to understand the link between functionality and expressive power. We will often use improvisation instead of set movements in order to understand and apply technical mechanisms in a conscious way; at the same time, a higher technical awareness will allow us to improvise more fluently and with more tools at our disposal.
