Movement Research at the Judson Church – June 16th, 2014

Featuring works by Julian Barnett, Katie Workum, Paul Singh, Caitlin Cook

My Own Private I-Don’t-Know
Choreography and performance by Julian Barnett
Music by Kieran Hebden
Dramaturgy by Jocelyn Tobias
My Own Private I-Don’t-Know is an experiment in communication, as well as a personal and indulgent response to a feeling of powerlessness. The work functions as a revealing, where layers of shifting perspectives build and expand perceptions of subjectivity and spectatorship. The work draws upon a research that proposes singing as an agent for choreography and is fixated on the performative-body as a context for culture, language, virtuosity and the absurd.

Black Lakes (work in progress)

Sound: James Lo
Evening length premiere at Mount Tremper Arts Summer Festival this August 8th and 9th.

Movement Research Studies Project – April 1 2014

Studies Project: The Conditions of Making Work Now

Part 1

Part 2

Movement Research Studies Project
TUE April 1 at 6pm
Gibney Dance Center
890 Broadway between 19th and 20th streets

THE CONDITIONS OF MAKING WORK NOW
Conceived by MR in partnership with 2012 AIRs Michelle Boulé and Larissa Velez-Jackson

Panelists confirmed to date: Yve Laris Cohen, Walter Dundervill and Larissa Velez-Jackson

In an environment where resources and opportunities to show fully produced work are limited, many artists are adapting to alternative formats for the creation and presentation of their work. How do these often short-form, multidisciplinary, low tech and/or multiple iteration structures affect both how artists make work and how that work is received? How do strategies, such as concentrating on performance as a practice, or creating in modular formats or formats adaptable to site and situation, complicate our concepts of authorship, production, reproducibility and artistic longevity? What are our ideal conditions for a dance?

ABOUT STUDIES PROJECT:
A series of artist-instigated panel discussions, roundtables, performances and/or other formats that engage issues of aesthetics, philosophy and social politics relevant to the dance and performance community.

Studies Project: Evolving Dance Pedagogies

Movement Research Studies Project
Tuesday, March 4 at 6pm
Gibney Dance Center
890 Broadway, New York, NY

Evolving Dance Pedagogies
Hosted by Critical Correspondence

Moderated by Nicole Daunic and Abigail Levine

With panelists:
Maura Donohue (Hunter College)
Simon Dove (formerly of Arizona State University)
Neil Greenberg (New School)
Patricia Hoffbauer (Hunter College, Princeton University)
Mariah Maloney (SUNY Brockport)

This conversation between professors from a variety of university dance departments will address the changing relationship between their programs and the field of dance. Panelists will discuss the emergence of dance studies and the model of the artist/scholar; issues of access, privilege, and the shifting economic structures of professional dance. Maura Donohue (Hunter College), Simon Dove (formerly of Arizona State University), Neil Greenberg (New School), Patricia Hoffbauer (Hunter College, Princeton University) and Mariah Maloney (SUNY Brockport) consider how these conditions affect their students and the way they structure their curricula. Critical Correspondence invites you to join us for a conversation about this critical alliance between academia and the field of dance.
