THE ROLE OF CLASS IN CURRENT DANCE PRACTICES
Conceived in conversation with MR Faculty

Organized by MR in collaboration with Beth Gill, Lance Gries, Eva Karczag and Gwen Welliver

Come listen in on a series of brief and intimate discussions with various teaching artists, addressing questions and ideas about dance and movement-based class through their own practices and histories. Afterwards, everyone present is invited to actively participate in smaller group conversations with an opportunity to share insights and proposals with the larger group. Participating speakers include Michelle Boulé, Jeanine Durning, Zvi Gotheiner, Karinne Keithley Syers, Nia Love, Juliette Mapp, Cori Olinghouse, Janet Panetta, Vicky Shick and more!

What role does “class” play in current dance practices? As contemporary teaching artists attempt to articulate new methods of transmitting knowledge through the body, so too are performers of contemporary dance and performance work drifting away from relying exclusively on traditional and codifiable techniques. How can we get the most out of the structures that exist and/or create new ones as we relate these models to the way people make work now? This conversation with teaching artists and practitioners will engage these seemingly intangible questions with concrete practices and proposals.

ABOUT STUDIES PROJECT:
A series of artist-instigated panel discussions, roundtables, performances and/or other formats that engage issues of aesthetics, philosophy and social politics relevant to the dance and performance community.

Jon Kinzel. Morning Class
December 8-22. Monday, Wednesday, Friday 10am-12pm. $14
Movement Research at Eden’s Expressway

This class is designed to access multiple threads at once such as: greater range of motion and articulation, isolated and momentum-driven movement forms, sense of scale, rhythm, alignment, ascent and descent, and dancing that supports a balanced square orientation over a vertical axis while traversing through space and shifting off center in a mode that reflects a play between athleticism, performance, and a particular disposition.

John Jasperse. Morning Class
December 9 – December 23. Tuesday, Thursday 10am-12pm. $14
Movement Research at Danspace Project, 131 E 10th Street

The class will begin with an anatomy focused warm-up, drawn from both traditional and recent techniques, aiming to align and re-pattern the energy flow in the body in order to find support from the floor and our connection into space. We will begin with simple movements, improvisation scores, exercises, and sequences gradually building in complexity. We will learn movement material, some from Jasperse’s work and some created for these explorations. Our goal will be to integrate energetic patterning explored in the first portion of class and to play with different manners of experiencing and embodying the choreographic material.

FOR WHAT was a discussion led by panelists who enjoy multi-faceted engagement with the cultural field, including healing elements, social justice aspects, performance activations, and various cultural considerations. The discussion was a response to the observation that many artists decide to be of service in some way to the culture and to others and addresses questions such as what are we doing, and what are we doing it for? What does it mean to live/work as an artist at this current time, and how do we position our work in relation to everything else in our lives and our environment? And in what way are our artistic practices necessary to a collective transformation of society?
