Anna Marie Shogren is a native Minneapolitan, and U of MN grad, come to Brooklyn, based artist. Her choreography has been seen at DNA, Gowanus Ballroom, Flux Factory, AUNTS, Catch!, The Walker, Southern Theater, Bryant Lake Bowl, and Pieter. She is currently dancing with the Body Cartography Project and Faye Driscoll, and previously with Morgan Thorson, Karen Sherman, Justin Jones, Laurie Van Wieren, Chris Schlichting. 1. Accumulation: Variation Bey
Trisha Brown’s 1971 work re-imagined with Beyonce Knowles as inspiration for “pedestrian”
2. Retro-bey
A phrase combining various Beyonce movements danced forward and backward (structurally based on the “Main” phrase of Trisha Brown’s Sololos)
3. Coordination Score
Based on imagined rules for bodily coordination used in Trisha Brown’s Water Motor
4. Tofo Motor
Moving between the steps of dance group Tofo Tofo and movements inspired by Water Motor

Ashley Byler, B.A. Music/Psychology, University of Alabama in Huntsville, MFA Dance Sarah Lawrence College, has shown work at DTW Studio Series, The Field’s Uptown/Downtown, Judson Church, and Ketchikan Theatre Ballet. She is an early childhood arts educator and dances with Sara Rudner. She is reclaiming “pedestrian” from post-modern dance, using popular dance and rigorous composition. Abby Zbikowski received her MFA in choreography from The Ohio State University, where she currently teaches full time in the Department of Dance, and makes work with her company, the new utility, that questions the role of movement in dance and the use of form. She holds a BFA in dance from Temple University and post-graduation worked with Philadelphia-based artists George Alley/Alley Ink Dance and Charles O. Anderson/dance theatre X, and is a current performer/collaborator with the Columbus, OH based Baker & Tarpaga Dance Project. As a choreographer, Abby’s work has been presented at DNA’s Raw Material in NYC, and the nEW Festival, Philly Fringe, Collage Festival, and New Edge Mix series in Philadelphia, among others.

RoseAnne Spradlin has been creating choreographic work in New York City since the early 1990s. Spradlin’s work has been recognized with numerous awards, including a New York Dance and Performance “Bessie” for Choreography in 2003, a Guggenheim Fellowship in 2007, the three year Lambent Fellowship in Performing Arts in 2006-08, the Artist Award from the Foundation for contemporary Arts in 2007 and an Artist Grant from the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation Creative Exploration fund in 2009. RoseAnne has been an Artist-in-Residence this year with Movement Research and BAX and would like to thank both organizations for their support. Also, many thanks to the dancers!!

This conversation examines what might be meant by “pushing boundaries”? How important is it in the creative process and its outcome? Is the point of view of the artist different from the one of the audience when determining something as “pushing boundaries”? What assumptions or cultural contexts are assumed to establish these boundaries? Are there other ways to value contemporary work?

Embodying and Exchanging Energy
This workshop will explore how individuals and groups embody and exchange “energy.” We will keep an open mind about how energy is present, sensed, and a source in us: inspiration, creativity, motivation, connection, collaboration, presence, emotion, spirituality – energy forms that exist in our physical and non physical experience, shaping our interactions. Guided experiences and improvisational forms bring our heightened awareness and dimensional bodies into a potent energetic state to create a supportive and collaborative environment, leading us to shared dancing, creativity, and discourse.

This class is designed to access multiple threads at once such as greater range of motion and articulation, isolated and momentum-driven movement forms, rhythmic and kinesthetic intelligence, sense of scale, ascent and descent, injury prevention, alignment, personal and musical expression, and dancing that supports a balanced square orientation over a vertical axis while traversing through space, and shifting off center, in a mode that reflects a play between athleticism, performance, and a particular disposition.

Class will be taught by Kayvon Pourazar on April 16 & 18. This class will focus on alignment, weight, clarity of momentum, and breath. Using influences from Chi Gong, Alexander, yoga, modern and postmodern constructs to release the joints, connect to the floor, lengthen the spine, activate the senses and warm the body. We continue the exploration in the second half through a combination of improvisation, phrase material and other choreographic structures to expand the experience of dancing.
