The workshop will be based on the Alexander Technique. There will be floor work with rubber balls, some “hands on,” as well as exploration of standing and walking.

JDT was not exclusively a dance movement. Artists of various disciplines participated in the movement that came to be known as JDT, including filmmakers. This screening highlights some of the many collaborations between Judson artists and film artists who were pushing at the boundaries of both forms.

Cry Dr. Chicago. 1971, 90 minutes, 16mm. Preserved by Anthology Film Archives with support from the National Film Preservation Foundation. Lab work by Cineric, Inc., and Trackwise.
In Manupelli’s wonderfully cracked feature, which had fallen almost entirely into oblivion when Anthology was able to revive and preserve it in 2008, Dr. Chicago (played by venerable composer Alvin Lucier) is a sex-change surgeon on the run from the law, forever on his way to Sweden and always out to make a buck. Along for the ride are his faithful companions Sheila Marie (the delightfully zonked-out Mary Ashley) and Steve (brilliantly, and silently, portrayed by the great dancer Steve Paxton, a founding member of Judson Dance Theater). By far one of the most enjoyable feature films to come out of the 1960s underground era.

In Powered by Emotion MÃ¥rten SpÃ¥ngberg reconstructs the Goldberg Variations, the fantastic dance improvisations by the American dance legend Steve Paxton, and several songs from the Buena Vista Social Club.Paxton himself said, SpÃ¥ngberg’s piece actually stands alone, more than being a reconstruction of anything particular. Can one reconstruct an improvisation? This question is not so interesting as the result of SpÃ¥ngberg’s ‘translation process’ itself.
Discussion to follow immediately after the performance: In the second part of the evening, moderated by Claude Wampler, Spångberg will be joined by artists including DD Dorvillier, and will address the following question: How does the imprint of Judson Dance Theater function within the contexts of European and American performance respectively?

Body Mind World, Movement & Language Improvisation
Sometimes our words don’t have access to what we know in our bones, while our dancing doesn’t have access to what’s on our minds. In this workshop we will explore the synergy between movement and language to engage with subject matter that interests us. The class will include warm-ups to awaken our kinetic juices, and focused stream of consciousness writing to put us in touch with our wild thoughts and observations. We will divide our class time between purely improvising with movement, talking together about whatever has been on our minds, and improvising combining moving and speaking.

Taking two everyday forms of movement, we will allow these forms to disorganize within, and to be disorganizing of, our bodies. This process will lead us into understandings of function and form and also into expressive potentials that arise within experimental states of disorder. As we explore in solo, duet, and ensemble improvisations, moving periodically in contact and/or with eyes closed, the lines between states of order and disorder will be at times stark and at others blurred. The sensations that arise within this unstable and unbound matrix range from relaxing to energizing, from disorienting to freeing.

Please join us for a discussion on the topic of parenting and its influence on one’s creative life. How can the journey of parenthood inspire and be additive to an artist’s lifestyle? Are there parenting challenges specific to the dance community? Is there anything we can do as a community to better support one another? We will share tips on how to find balance between our professional and private lives. Participants include new and veteran parents as well as those contemplating parenthood or simply interested in this topic. On-site childcare will be provided.

PROSODIC BODY Workshop: Choreoprosodia (the fusion of movement and prosody)
These six workshops focus on the sonic properties of language exploring the correspondences between energy centers, hormonal secretion, seed movements, sonic harmony, and emotional and neurological impact. Spending time with each of the different phoneme-harmonic-compositions developed for the Phoneme Choir, we will use a ‘scientific methodology’ to differentiate and name how each affects individuals and inform us of their healing and performative properties.

Writing dance
Choreographer Jonathan Burrows leads a three day workshop investigating choreographic and compositional process, performance and philosophies, questioning how a dance or performance might be made and what it could communicate to somebody watching. Practical work will concentrate on short task-based exercises looking at how to define material and work with time, to hold the attention of an audience and invite them to care what happens next. Sessions will be punctuated also with discussion and viewpoints on other mediums and ways of working, asking all the time what dance can do and what it can’t.

The Lost, The Found and The Fantasy: Urban Meditation
Through an interdisciplinary approach, participants will work with excavating found images, phrases overheard on the bus, movement studies from the street and found sounds and texts to develop their own response to the city and its current dialogue with us. These found materials are things that pulled you towards them, attracted your attention, even if you are not completely sure why. From this fieldwork material, participants will work in the studio with further writing, movement and installation experiments to explore re-enlivening our city-life. Informal, “instant” showings link what has been found with a larger vision of what could be possible. Participants are asked to come to the studio with a scrap of conversation overheard publicly, a picture of a specific place or person in the city, a gesture or series of gestures that they observed in their everyday walks, a torn piece of text found on the street.

The Practice Turn in Contemporary Theory, edited by Theodore R. Schatzki, Karen Knorr Cetina, and Eike von Savigny (Routledge, 2001) is a collection of essays on practice from the perspective of social theory. This means that, although many of its examples are drawn from embodied practice — some even from the performing arts — it is most of all concerned with practice in the broadest sense: “fighting together, hunting together, sailing together, singing together, even, in the present-day world, doing science together” (25).

Given the recent focus on embodied knowledge in dance and dance studies, I would like to draw attention to the field of physical education. Both dance and “physical education” are founded on the notion of education through and of the body. It is also true that in many schools and colleges one can get “phys. ed.” credit for taking dance classes. Yet the world of professional and experimental dance still feels very divorced from the world of physical education.

Scholar’s Corner: PERFORMANCE AFFECTS

James Thompson’s Performance Affects: Applied Theatre and the End of Affect (Palgrave Macmillan, 2009) opens with the story of a massacre in a Sri Lankan “rehabilitation centre” for former child soldiers. Most chillingly of all, Thompson suspects that a program of applied theatre that ran in the camp several months before the massacre may have been part of what led up to the killings. Not in a direct way, of course. But Thompson wonders if this program, which he was in charge of, was part of the Sri Lankan government’s overall political strategy. In other words, he wonders if his theatre work was in this instance unwittingly complicit with the machinations of the Sri Lankan government — part of its own effort to perform respectable statehood on the stage of international politics.

Scholar’s Corner: DANCING COMMUNITIES

Finally, I arrive at a book that is explicitly about dance: Judith Hamera’s Dancing Communities: Performance, Difference and Connection in the Global City (Palgrave Macmillan, 2007). Although this book does not have quite the coherent structure or unified argument of the previous two, it does accomplish something that I called for in my previous post: It places ballet and Pilates training (among other examples) side by side and examines them each as embodied practices, rather than segregating them on account of dance’s public role as one of the “performing arts” and the status of Pilates as a personal rather than public practice.
