The final work will be presented by The Performing Garage, NYC in Fall/Winter 2013. The development of the work was supported by Lower Manhattan Cultural Council’s Swing Space program through a real estate donation from Capstone Equities. Without their support, we could not have made this work.

Koosil-ja has received fellowships from NEA, NYFA, Guggenheim Foundation, Asian Cultural Council, a “Bessie” award, and LMCC President Award. Geoff Matters uses his own software “GDAM” along with innovative homemade and repurposed physical controllers in live and interactive music performances, under his real name or the aliases GeoffGDAM and Lance Blisters. As a founder of “Share” forum and open jam for audio and video artists, he helps provide a weekly opportunity to explore developments in live, collaborative, and experimental art, as well as a venue for performances by local and touring artists. As LANCE BLISTERS he performs LIVE Jungle, Breakcore, Punk, and Noise using MIDI Guitar and Microphone, using custom software to create cutup political anthems – a new and unique blend of songwriting, live performance, and electronic music. Geoff has performed in throughout the US and Europe. Geoff has composed and performed music and video for several dance pieces by koosil-ja/dance KUMIKO, including mech[a]OUTPUT (2003) deadmandancing EXCESS(2004) public sleep/Sleepover(2004, 2005) Live Processing (2006) and Dance Without Bodies (2006) and Blocks of Continuality (2010) and Invisible/Visible (2012). Geoff has received grants from Experimental Television Center and Meet The Composer and a commission from American Music Center Live Music For Dance.

Linda Tarnay recently retired from N.Y.U. Tisch School of the Arts where she taught for 35 years. She directed her own Company, Linda Tarnay and Dancers, and received choreography grants from NEA, NYSCA, and CAPS. She received citations for Distinguished Teaching from N.Y.U. and the American Dance Festival. She is also a writer of short stories influenced by her father, an English professor.

This is the first draft of a research about individual journey’s through the city; bodies drawing and painting their space in the crowd.
This project was made possible, in part, through the Movement Research Artist-In-Residence Program, funded, in part, by the Jerome Foundation and the Leonard and Sophie Davis Fund.

Katia Castañeda Urzúa is a director, performer and teacher. She earned her degree in Dramatic Arts from Universidad Veracruzana. She works independently, acting and directing her own projects and in collaboration with diverse disciplines and with dance and theatre companies. She has work with Allora&Calzadilla, Quiatora Monorriel, Daniel Lara, Nadia Lartigue, Compañía Teatro de Ciertos Habitantes, Estudio 28, Arte físico, Pablo Mandoki and Abraham Oceranski among others. As a director she was the recipient of the Young Artists fellowship from the National Endowment of Arts, in Mexico in 2009-2010. She also received this distinction as a performer in 2001-2002. Currently, she’s a Movement Research Artist-in-Residence.

Chris Aiken is a leading performer and teacher in the field of dance improvisation and contact improvisation. His work has evolved through ongoing investigations of performance, learning, perception and imagination. His work has been significantly influenced through the somatic practices of the Alexander Technique, ideokinesis, yoga and structural integration. Chris is an Assistant Professor and MFA Director in the Dance Department at Smith College and the Five College Dance Department. He recently premiered a new commissioned work with Angie Hauser entitled Utopia Parkway that was funded by the National Performance Network’s Commissioning Fund.

Ray Chung is a performer, teacher, engineer, and artist with a passion for dancing which he likes to share with other people. His main focus is improvisation and he has worked with Contact Improvisation since 1979 as part of improvisational performance practice and integrates other movement forms into his work, including martial arts, bodywork and Authentic Movement. Ray has worked with the leading proponents of Contact Improvisation and regularly collaborates with dancers, musicians, and other artists.

Mike Vargas works internationally as a freelance composer performing, teaching, recording, and improvising. Primarily a solo artist and a pianist, Vargas also specializes in percussion and electronic music. He regularly presents concerts of his work, sometimes collaborating with other musicians and artists, often in relatively small ensembles. Vargas has released 9 CDs of his music and in 2003 published an article in Contact Quarterly entitled, “Looking at Composition is like Painting the Golden Gate Bridge: 86 Aspects of Composition.” He is currently on the faculty in the dance department at Smith College. He has a daughter, Gray, and lives with his partner Nancy Stark Smith in Florence, Massachusetts.

EXPRESS TRAIN TO STATES OF GRACE: CI, contemplation, and composition
Like scaling Mt Everest, States of Grace is a pinnacle — elusive, ever-present, dangerous, fantasized, in our minds. And our bodies. “States of Grace” is what can happen when all the balls are in the air at once: solo dancing, contact improvisation, non-CI improvisation, contemplation, composition, listening, performance/art, mystery, and humanity. Many questions. Embodied research. Can we move easily between solo, contact improvisation, group work, somatic sources and impulses, and compositional awareness? What does this make? Only way to discover is to do it and find out. The Underscore on Sunday is the culminating vehicle for our discoveries. Participants should have previous experience with Contact Improvisation.

The Underscore is a long jamming/contact/improvisation/composition score that Nancy has been developing since the early 1990s as a framework for dance improvisation research. It guides dancers through a series of “changing states” — from solo relaxation and sensitizing to gravity and support, through group circulation and interaction, contact improvisation engagements, opening out to full group improvisation, and back to rest and reflection. Previous experience with Contact Improvisation and attendance at the talk is required for participation in the Underscore practice.

Taking the following as an ambitious base, we’ll try out various configurations in which we might think-act together what a community choreography could be, understanding the idea of community not in terms of difference from other groups but in terms of a specific way of being together.

Forsythe Improv and Phrase Workshop
Long time Forsythe dancer Elizabeth Corbett guides an exploration into the working methodologies inspired by the creative processes of William Forsythe. In this workshop dancers explore and develop improvisation approaches and deconstruction of Forsythe’s phrase work toward accessing the inner logic and unfolding mechanisms in the work.

Beauty, awkwardness, form, strength, weakness. Intended to be both laboratory and class, we will delve into the design of the body and its potential within a given moment. Through open practices, stretch and placement, technique studies, and movement phrases, habits will be discovered, challenged, and seen through a new lens. A concentration on the forces through the legs will lead to finding the range in separate body parts and ways to use your weight into the floor. My hope is for you to feel present and challenged and to leave class with a few answers and many more questions.

This class will dedicate itself to promoting spatial and corporeal awareness, through clarity and precision. Inviting ourselves to question, welcome, enhance, abandon and rediscover movement patterns, focal points, qualities, personal habits and preferences in order to stay alert in the present moment. Through a gentle warm up, using a series of improvisational but mostly set exercises we will transition to a pre-conceived phrase to share experiences while encouraging individuality. Let’s perceive ‘technique’ as an invaluable tool that opens doors and allows our bodies to be present in the now.

PROSODIC BODY Workshop: Choreoprosodia (the fusion of movement and prosody)
These six workshops focus on the sonic properties of language exploring the correspondences between energy centers, hormonal secretion, seed movements, sonic harmony, and emotional and neurological impact. Spending time with each of the different phoneme-harmonic-compositions developed for the Phoneme Choir, we will use a ‘scientific methodology’ to differentiate and name how each affects individuals and inform us of their healing and performative properties.

There Are No Stepbrothers in Dance
I think the statement “there are no stepbrothers in dance” is a paraphrase of something Balanchine said. His point was that one could only say so much in a dance, and yet what a dance can convey is particular and specific to the medium. In this workshop, we will look at the limitations and strengths of the medium in order to become more exact in our choreographic choices and in order to elicit more clarity from the contexts of meaning we create. Bring 3-10 minutes of a complete choreographic work to be presented live either with you as a solo performer or invite your performers. We will also work on developing some specific tools through compositional exercises. Be prepared to also read, talk, debate, listen, and imagine aloud.

An Eco-poetic Approach to Dance Improvisation and Performance
In this movement workshop we will explore awareness and intention through the development of perceptual acuity in relationship to our inner and outer landscapes. We will examine the delicate relationships between our poetic imagination and our sensory systems. The basis of my approach is that composition and performance are ecologically rooted acts. Our imagination grows from where and how we exist. Movement, story, image and gesture are imbedded in the relationships that are evolving all around us. Come ready to dance, perceive, perform and imagine.

PROSODIC BODY Workshop: Choreoprosodia (the fusion of movement and prosody)
These six workshops focus on the sonic properties of language exploring the correspondences between energy centers, hormonal secretion, seed movements, sonic harmony, and emotional and neurological impact. Spending time with each of the different phoneme-harmonic-compositions developed for the Phoneme Choir, we will use a ‘scientific methodology’ to differentiate and name how each affects individuals and inform us of their healing and performative properties.

Winter MELT 2012.

MELT Intensives are a series of daily workshops in technique, somatics, improvisation, composition and other areas offered each summer (5 weeks) and winter (3 weeks). Taught by Movement Research’s internationally recognized faculty as well as acclaimed guest artists, these workshops provide students with the unique opportunity to engage with some of the most highly regarded and innovative artists in the field of dance today.

Horizons
Learn a warm-up choreography designed to enhance visual focus, hand-eye coordination, articulation of hands and feet, freedom of the spine, and the dancer’s own phrasing. In addition this sequence can be used as a physical and mental preparation for performance.

There Are No Stepbrothers in Dance
I think the statement “there are no stepbrothers in dance” is a paraphrase of something Balanchine said. His point was that one could only say so much in a dance, and yet what a dance can convey is particular and specific to the medium. In this workshop, we will look at the limitations and strengths of the medium in order to become more exact in our choreographic choices and in order to elicit more clarity from the contexts of meaning we create. Bring 3-10 minutes of a complete choreographic work to be presented live either with you as a solo performer or invite your performers. We will also work on developing some specific tools through compositional exercises. Be prepared to also read, talk, debate, listen, and imagine aloud.

An Eco-poetic Approach to Dance Improvisation and Performance
In this movement workshop we will explore awareness and intention through the development of perceptual acuity in relationship to our inner and outer landscapes. We will examine the delicate relationships between our poetic imagination and our sensory systems. The basis of my approach is that composition and performance are ecologically rooted acts. Our imagination grows from where and how we exist. Movement, story, image and gesture are imbedded in the relationships that are evolving all around us. Come ready to dance, perceive, perform and imagine.

Touch Move Talk Write: open studio practices
This workshop focuses on generating new practices through touching, moving, talking, and writing. We will shape each practice with simple rules and apply different sequences and durations, giving equal time to all four aspects. By pushing the notion of practice to extremes, one begins to understand assumptions about style, body, self, technique, unspoken rules, expertise, etc. etc… The aim is to proliferate unexpected results, to try many things quickly, and to foment revolution. Please don’t come without a notebook and a pen.

Registering for full weeks saves you significant amounts of money:

$825 for 3 full weeks (9 workshops, a savings of $255)
$600 for 2 full weeks (6 workshops, a savings of $120)
$310 for 1 full week (3 workshops, a savings of $50)

Individual workshops cost $115-$130.

Payment in full reserves your spot in any workshop or package enrollment. For packages, you may also make a deposit to reserve your spot. Balance of tuition is due no later than December 12, 2011.

Housing

Movement Research does not provide housing. We encourage students and those with housing available to become our friends on Facebook and post on our housing discussion board.

refund policy: Refunds will be available for individual workshops until 1 week before start of workshop minus a $50 processing fee per workshop. For week-based package enrollment, refunds will be available until 1 week before start of full enrollment, minus a $75 processing fee. Refunds cannot be given if notice is not received as stated. Credit towards future classes and workshops may be extended in the event of illness or injury. All refund and credit requests must be made in writing.
