We will wake up the internal space that unites all perceptual facets, and open our ears as well as our skin, muscle, and bone to sound. Come prepared to touch and be touched, to move and be moved, as well as listen. It will be energizing and rigorous. No prior experience with the voice is required…read more

Moving from Touch
Touch comes in many shapes and sizes. From a hand resting on a hand or arm, to a back resting against a back breathing together. We are all born knowing experientially the gift of touch. When we give touch, we receive touch in return – an exchange of information from body to body – reciprocity. Touch can draw our attention from deep inside the body to the surface, to skin, and touch can take our attention from skin to depth, addressing and integrating fundamental facets of our being and giving us information about body systems, movement qualities and thought processes, as well as opening spaces for imagination. In this workshop we will explore moving from touch.

Classes this week with…

Nia Love. Morning Class
Monday, Wednesday, Friday. 10am-12pm. $14
Eden’s Expressway, 537 Broadway
Class starts with across the floor rhythmic gaits that investigate independence in the body. Stacking sequential rhythmic patterns build on cardio and core work that emphasizes a feminine-derived energy where conical movement attaches to the base of the spine and radiates up through the core and out to the extremities. Center floor exercises focus on skeletal-muscular motion; rotations, isolations, and weight shifts explore a more grounded approach. The incorporation of a more crisp sensibility to an urban approach that partners up with African, postmodern, Butoh, funk and blues sensibilities. The goal: to break down inhibitions, fine tune modern techniques, yet approach dance with a sense of abandonment!

Levi Gonzalez. Morning Class.
Tuesday & Thursday. 10:00am-12:00pm. $14.
Danspace Project, 131 E. 10th Street.

Using the morning technique class structure as a model, this class will focus on dance as a physical, conceptual, and experiential practice, with an emphasis on cultivating presence inside of the forms. Class often begins with imagery and gentle preparation culled from various body-based somatic modalities that access our awareness of the organs, the skeleton, gravity, and energetic pathways through the architecture of the body and into the space. Class may also include technical exercises, choreographic structures, improvisations, and performance constructs, taking our time to engage with these materials with precision, imagination, and a thorough and informed sense of embodiment.

Sunday May 5. Studies Project: Dramaturgy as Practice/Dramaturgy in Practice: A conversation in two parts
2:30-4:30pm
Center for Performance Research

Conceived by Amanda Loulaki and Susan Mar Landau
A Roundtable discussion with Thomas F. DeFrantz, Susan Mar Landau, Andre Lepecki and Katherine Profeta

FREE

The dramaturg as an active participant in the conceiving and making of movement based works is a relatively new and evolving phenomenon, as well as one that can be both mysterious and suspect. Conceived as a two-part event, Dramaturgy as Practice/Dramaturgy in Practice will explore both the ontology and the workings of dance dramaturgy today. Precluded by a short history on the topic, the first event will bring together a diverse group of working dramaturges to discuss their experiences and the possible implications of their role in the choreographic process. The second event, to take place in the fall, will open the conversation to include choreographers in an in depth discussion on the practice of dramaturgy.

Thursday-Sunday May 15-19. Workshop with Claudia La Rocco: Why I am not a painter.

Why I am not a painter
This is a writing workshop. It is open to anyone who wants to play with words, to see what they can do, and how. But it is made with dance-artists in mind. How do words live in time and space, whether on the stage, the page or in the mind? Critical writing, creative writing, performance texts… are they really such different creatures? Does a dancer have a particular way of approaching language? What about a writer who spends so much of her time watching dancers? So many questions. We’ll spend our time looking for answers, individually and as a group.

Classes this week with…

Asli Bulbul. Morning Class.
Monday, Wednesday, Friday. 10:00am-12:00pm. $14.
Movement Research at Eden’s Expressway, 537 Broadway, 4th Floor.

Working from the body’s innate intelligence, class will start with simple awareness and coordination exercises influenced by different somatic disciplines to organize the body and prepare us for more technical movement. We will work on remembering and re-wiring organic pathways and explore alternative solutions to our habitual patterns. Class will build in physical intensity, culminating in a chance to put our experiments to the test. Sometimes this will mean phrase work and other times class will stay in a more lab/workshop-like format.

Workshops and Studies Projects This Week.

Wednesday April 17. Studies Project: “Pushing Boundaries.”
6:15pm
Gibney Dance Center
Conceived by Ori Flomin
With panelists Arthur Aviles, Jennifer Wright Cook, Colleen Thomas, Larissa Velez-Jackson and more
Moderated by Moira Brennan

Much value is placed on the idea of artwork that is at the cutting edge, with the words “pushing boundaries” emphasized in grants, applications and curating language. This conversation examines what might be meant by “pushing boundaries”? How important is it in the creative process and its outcome? Is the point of view of the artist different from the one of the audience when determining something as “pushing boundaries”? What assumptions or cultural contexts are assumed to establish these boundaries? Are there other ways to value contemporary work?

April 12-20. Workshop with Larissa Velez-Jackson.
April 19 FRI 2:30-5:30pm
April 20 SAT 4:30-7:30pm

Embodying and Exchanging Energy
This workshop will explore how individuals and groups embody and exchange “energy.” We will keep an open mind about how energy is present, sensed, and a source in us: inspiration, creativity, motivation, connection, collaboration, presence, emotion, spirituality – energy forms that exist in our physical and non physical experience, shaping our interactions. Guided experiences and improvisational forms bring our heightened awareness and dimensional bodies into a potent energetic state to create a supportive and collaborative environment, leading us to shared dancing, creativity, and discourse.
