A Note from the Curators of VANISHING POINTS

Nelisiwe Xaba was an early catalyst in our conversations on plasticity in art making. Watching her solo work and discussing what drew us to it helped us to articulate a shared space of interest for the festival. What we saw and were captivated by was a calculated shifting of sculptural portraiture and the visual puzzling of materials: costume, objects, light and the body.

Her work Fremde Tänze was created during a project in Freiburg, Germany in which she was asked to consider and respond to early German choreographers such as Mary Wigman who were influenced by exotic dance. These pioneers of modern dance in the 1910s and 1920s often presented a series of short, exoticist pieces accompanied by music.  In her evening of “Foreign Dances”, Nelisiwe Xaba turns around the perspective and exoticizes the Black Forest.

What a Horse!

For the festival, we invited Gwen Welliver to share What a Horse! inspired by Paul Klee’s image of the same name (Was für ein Pferd! 1929). In her piece, Welliver embraces “formalism and fantasy” as she uses the lines of the body to conjure and summon imaginative representations that hint at character, fantasy, and metaphor. The raucous, relentless, and poetic suggestions emerging from the physical body offer imaginative resonances that moves beyond abstraction.

double nickels on the dime

Abby Zbikowski will present double nickels on the dime. Zbikowski’s choreography is radical through the extreme use of labor in the body. Visual rhythms emerge in a brutish, demanding fashion. In post-modern dance, authenticity is often connected to ideas of easefulness and non-doing in the body. Zbikowski offers a new perspective—subverting the idea of an easeful or non-effortful body.

“This work interrogates effort in the body and its potential to manifest in multiple aesthetic worlds.  This explosive effort in the body sustained across multiple movement worlds deliberately renders my political perspective on dance.  I would call it a hybrid approach to moving rather than a hybrid movement vocabulary.”

We originally approached Melinda Ring about her 1999 work Impossible Dances, inquiring if this was a work she could imagine ‘gifting’ to another artist. Gifting is a proposal we dreamed up as a possibility to redirect the typical exchange of artists appropriating other artists’ ideas and work. We see this process of gifting as a mentoring process; Kai Kleinbard will work closely with Ring to reimagine Impossible Dance #2 (still life) in his own aesthetic style. Our interest is to allow the exchange of information to remain dynamic through keeping the gift in motion. In this instance, the gift moves in an orbit between Melinda, Kai, and the audience. Impossible Dances: Past and Future imaginatively explores these spaces of remembering, gifting, and interpretation asking how ephemeral forms are transmitted, reconstructed, and exchanged.

To feel a part of something. Communal, to have community. To be asked, invited in, to ask to be invited in. Access, entry. While the role of curator and the process of curation holds as much artistry as the making of dance and performance, we hone in on an equally important need for a touch of transparency surrounding the presentation of dance and the body. What issues and concerns arise inside of a shifting community where representation is crucial for belonging and sustainable support? What are we doing to reach out to more artists? Where are those artists? Who are those artists? What are the complexities that arise while supporting the sustainability of an artist? What responsibility do we have to an idea of cultivating and supporting “newness?” Where is the body inside all of this? How do we digest being on the inside or outside of something spiritually, aesthetically, emotionally and academically?

We are holograms where each part is a whole. We are quadratic when we answer questions with neither a yes nor a no. We are organized when we drop $200 on the complete Kvissle desk organizer set from Ikea including cable management casket, letter tray and ubiquitous box with cork lid, set of 4. Drawing on my extensive work with Anne Teresa deKeersmaeker’s Rosas as well as a host of others, this workshop will take a look what we’re doing with all of our dancing stuff. What’s my material? What’s a tool? Am I building something? Where can i put it? Does that make me a craftsman? Can all of it be laser rendered holographically, smudged in to so many shades of gray or finely dismembered and stored in sleek interlocking cork boxes, set of 4?

Some daily practice in the morning, to wake up, or feel up, or tender up, or just get into your day, or your week, or your/our entire future. A little different every day, warming up with some SRT-based, fake MB-based, semi-aerobics, ballet, and mofongo yoga. Depends on us. Then an hour devoted to serious moving with eyes closed in partners, with brief exchanges of talking about our experience.

This technique class begins with explorations of the body that allow us to discover and notice the use of weight and momentum, clear alignment, clarity of initiation, and direction of energy. From there the class will build upon itself to more complex coordinations that lead to an opening of the body and an expansion of possibilities as we move through movement material.

In 1982, Danspace Project and Bennington College collaborated on “The Judson Project,” a series of performances dedicated to reconstructing Judson-era works with 14 Judson choreographers, including Edward Bhartonn, Remy Charlip, Lucinda Childs, Philip Corner, Brian De Palma, Judith Dunn, Simone Forti, Deborah Hay, Aileen Passloff, Steve Paxton, Yvonne Rainer, Carolee Schneemann, Elaine Summers, and James Waring. The Bennington College Judson Project also filmed interviews with many of the artists that were central to Judson Dance Theater. Danspace Project and Movement Research share a selection of these rarely-seen reconstructions and interviews in a special afternoon screening.

Updates from Critical Correspondence 4/17

Hello from Critical Correspondence! Keeping you posted as to what’s new. Jean Butler has posted two interviews in a series on Danspace Project’s visionary Platform curation project – one with Back to NYC curator Juliette Mapp and one with participating artist Jen Rosenblit. Also, check out a video interview with Clarinda MacLow as part of Alejandra Martorell’s series What Sustains You? which takes a thoughtful look at various artist’s strategies at creating something functional out of the crazy existence of being a dance artist in NYC. Also up is an interview with the organizers of Fantasy Generator, a rethinking of the traditional model of a residency that took place at Hollins University last summer with the idea of radical generosity at its core. And we have notes from one of the discussions as part of the Trisha Brown Dance Company’s 40th Anniversary Lecture Series called “Talking About the Work.” Much more in the works so check back!


Again at the library.  But I won’t spend the little bit of time I have to complain about hard drive breakdowns in computer.  There is a strange sense of space in my home to not be chained to my laptop, and also frustration as to not being able to work at home, to follow my thoughts, to get lost.

I went to a panel discussion last Saturday at BAC, sponsored by Danspace Project.  The panelists  were the artists curated by Ralph Lemon in hisi get lost series.  Each artists had some time to talk about their work and how they get lost in their work.

I found (no pun intended, or maybe, yes…) myself wanting to get lost more in the discussion.  Read the rest of this entry »
