This evening’s premiere of Videotape will be performed by Janelle Barry and choreographer Gina Graham, who invite you, the viewer, to become the photographer and videographer. Please get up close to the dancers, walk around and take pictures or short video clips (one minute maximum) of the dance-in-the-making. The media you capture will eventually become a larger part of future reiterations of Videotape and your name will be credited with your images. Graham will pick her favorite video or photo, retweet it, and feature the artist’s work across other social channels. It will also become part of the promotional material to represent the work going forward. Marissa Perel is an artist and writer based in Brooklyn. She is interested in the body’s relationship to desire and power within and against socio-political constructs. Her work explores these dynamics through performance, video, installation and text. She is the columnist on performance for the Art21 blog, and co-editor of Critical Correspondence. Perel was co-curator of the Movement Research Festival Spring 2012. Tina Croll, founding member of Dance Theater Workshop, studied with Merce Cunningham, Erick Hawkins, Nina Fonoroff; performed in the companies of Jeff Duncan, Jack Moore, Jamie Cunningham, Judith Dunn; established Tina Croll + Company. After a quest that took her to India and Europe, Croll returned to NYC in 1993, performing her work at The Duke on 42, Danspace, DTW, P.S. 122, The Kitchen. Evening-length works produced by Danspace Project include Ancient Springs with a cast of 20 and Balkan Dreams, a collaboration with Zlatne Uste Balkan Brass Band with 38 dancers and musicians. Formed an improvisation group, “the Gang of Four,” with Wendy Perron, Douglas Dunn, and Kenneth King. Liana Conyers, B.A. Bennington College, M.F.A U of O. Liana has performed with Keith Thompson, Jhon Stronks, Wayne Smith, and CORE Performance Company. Liana has choreographed for Spelman College Dance Theatre, and has taught movement classes for Several Dancers Core, Ballethnic, DNA, and interned with the Cunningham Foundation, and Joyce Theatre. Liana was a guest instructor at the ACDFA NW Conference, where her choreography was presented. She is a regular performer and guest instructor at the Big Range Festival in TX. Her scholarly research includes investigating autobiography and identity in dance for black female choreographers. This on-going research has been presented at the U of O Annual Graduate Research Forum 2010-2012, the Juxtapose Philadelphia series 2012, and the 2013 IABD conference.

With Emotional Anatomy, you create a new anatomic system based on the features of your emotions. Is your love swaying like jelly in the belly, or is it a sticky point in your mouth? Is the envy pulsating somewhere in between your disappointment and optimism? Come and materialize your emotions in a free class at Eden’s Expressway on Monday, November 12, 3:30-4:30pm. Emotional Anatomy was developed in Sweden through methods of imaginative and experiential techniques and is for the first time presented in the US. The practice ignores scientific and anatomic facts in favor of speculation, and functions as a system for the materialisation of emotions through the drawing of a new anatomic map.

*MRX is a vehicle to spur interaction and exchange among independent choreographers and their peers from within and outside the US. MRX enables Artists-in-Residence and faculty to travel outside their home environment for residency activities, informal showings, discussions and teaching opportunities.

On September 16, Movement Research (MR) solicited questions from the greater MR community with regards to the imprint that Judson Dance Theater (1962–64) continues to make on contemporary performance. Four questions were selected by attendees as focus topics for further investigation by artists nominated to lead a series of week-long performance laboratories and open rehearsals at the New Museum. On this program, those artists share the results of their investigations for further consideration in an evening filled with performance, experimentation, and lively debate.

Using the morning technique class structure as a model, this class will focus on dance as a physical, conceptual and experiential practice, with an emphasis on the cultivation of presence inside of the forms. Class will begin with imagery and gentle preparation culled from various bodywork modalities that access our awareness of the organs, the skeleton, gravity and energetic pathways through the architecture of the body and into the space. Class will expand into technical exercises, choreographic structures, improvisations and performance constructs, exploring ways to engage with the material through precise and imaginative means.

Using improvisational and set warm-ups we will focus on the volume and weight inside the body and its relationship to the floor. Exercises that bring awareness to the feet, spine, and pelvic floor encourage the feeling of release in the limbs, allowing us to fall and suspend off-center, simultaneously finding a grounded flexible base of support. Using these physical tools we will explore sensation, instinct, and the inherent musicality inside the body, phrasing. All the while dancing we will work toward a more grounded and direct approach to movement.

This seminar addresses, through open research and experimentation, the shifting contexts of choreography and dance in contemporary society. It considers dance and choreography as work engaged in specific modes of production and not primarily as expression or representation. The workshop drafts notions of choreography as expanded practice next to probing the grounds for the possibility of dance to again identify itself as an autonomous medium. The different sessions embark on excessive detours into economy, policy and politics, detecting the position of dance and choreography within the context of neo-liberalism and a society where subjectivity and time has been corporatized. It is, at the same time, an attempt to open a ground for dance and choreography in respect to composition, improvisation, expression, organization, interpretation and affect. The different seminars can be attended as a connected series to be finalized with a presentation at MoMA PS1 on November 4, 2012 but can also be attended as separate events. Participants need no dance background but should bring something nice to dance in, and a blanket is always good.

A Pluralistic View of the Judson Dance Theater Legacy:
Yvonne Rainer & Aileen Passloff with Wendy Perron

The divergences between the work of Yvonne Rainer and Aileen Passloff highlight the vastness of the imprint of Judson Dance Theater (1962-64; JDT) while dismantling the myth of a singular Judson aesthetic. Rainer, along with dance artists Steve Paxton, Trisha Brown, Lucinda Childs, David Gordon, and others, broke with the conventions of modern dance by exploring task dances and the Dadaist idea of radical juxtaposition. Passloff, along with Jimmy Waring, Fred Herko, Arlene Rothlein, and others, reveled in the full-out dancing and whimsy of modern dance. In this talk, moderated by Wendy Perron, Rainer and Passloff consider the legacy of Judson Dance Theater from the perspectives of their divergent practices.

Some questions that Rainer and Passloff will address: What were you saying “No” to, and what were you saying “Yes” to? In what ways did the ’60s affect Judson Dance Theater? How did others in the JDT collective influence your work? What artistic values do you feel JDT has handed down to later generations?

Critical Correspondence is an online publication of Movement Research. For this program, Critical Correspondence coeditors Aaron Mattocks and Marissa Perel honor the celebrated writer and critic Jill Johnston, whose experimental and personal voice communicated the culture of the interdisciplinary 1960s art scene. In light of Johnston’s innovative contributions to the form, this conversation considers contemporary criticism and the writer as subject. Speakers include frontrunners of print journalism and the blogosphere alike. Performative readings of reviews on dance and performance are included.

THE SPACE IN BACK OF YOU

This highly visual and visceral documentary investigates the creative life of Suzushi Hanayagi, a powerful, innovative, even radical Japanese dancer and choreographer. For over 20 years she was a close collaborator with and major influence on theater legend Robert Wilson, who referred to her simply as “my teacher”. When Wilson discovers Hanayagi living in an old-age home and suffering from Alzheimer’s, Wilson resolves to work with her once again. Poignant witness to the transition of a life from vibrancy to legacy, this film becomes the final collaboration between a great teacher and her most renowned student.

A sweeping look at 11 years of practice of Contact Improvisation by Nancy Stark Smith and Steve Paxton. The progression from its beginnings in 1972 through successive years of performances up to 1983 shows one strand of the development of this multifaceted duet dance form.
