A Note from the Curators of VANISHING POINTS

Fremde Tänze
Created and performed by Nelisiwe Xaba

Nelisiwe Xaba was an early catalyst in our conversations on plasticity in art making. Watching her solo work and discussing what drew us to it helped us to articulate a shared space of interest for the festival. What we saw and were captivated by was a calculated shifting of sculptural portraiture and the visual puzzling of materials: costume, objects, light and the body.

Her work Fremde Tänze was created during a project in Freiburg, Germany in which she was asked to consider and respond to early German choreographers such as Mary Wigman who were influenced by exotic dance. These pioneers of modern dance in the 1910s and 1920s often presented a series of short, exoticist pieces accompanied by music.  In her evening of “Foreign Dances”, Nelisiwe Xaba turns around the perspective and exoticizes the Black Forest.

What a Horse!

For the festival, we invited Gwen Welliver to share What a Horse! inspired by Paul Klee’s image of the same name (Was für ein Pferd! 1929). In her piece, Welliver embraces “formalism and fantasy” as she uses the lines of the body to conjure and summon imaginative representations that hint at character, fantasy, and metaphor. The raucous, relentless, and poetic suggestions emerging from the physical body offer imaginative resonances that moves beyond abstraction.

double nickels on the dime

Abby Zbikowski will present double nickels on the dime. Zbikowski’s choreography is radical through the extreme use of labor in the body. Visual rhythms emerge in a brutish, demanding fashion. In post-modern dance, authenticity is often connected to ideas of easefulness and non-doing in the body. Zbikowski offers a new perspective—subverting the idea of an easeful or non-effortful body.

“This work interrogates effort in the body and its potential to manifest in multiple aesthetic worlds.  This explosive effort in the body sustained across multiple movement worlds deliberately renders my political perspective on dance.  I would call it a hybrid approach to moving rather than a hybrid movement vocabulary.”

We originally approached Melinda Ring about her 1999 work Impossible Dances, inquiring if this was a work she could imagine ‘gifting’ to another artist. Gifting is a proposal we dreamed up as a possibility to redirect the typical exchange of artists appropriating other artists’ ideas and work. We see this process of gifting as a mentoring process; Kai Kleinbard will work closely with Ring to reimagine Impossible Dance #2 (still life) in his own aesthetic style. Our interest is to allow the exchange of information to remain dynamic through keeping the gift in motion. In this instance, the gift moves in an orbit between Melinda, Kai, and the audience. Impossible Dances: Past and Future imaginatively explores these spaces of remembering, gifting, and interpretation asking how ephemeral forms are transmitted, reconstructed, and exchanged.

The Role of Class was a series of brief and intimate discussions with various teaching artists including Julian Barnett, Michelle Boulé, Wendell Cooper, Jeanine Durning, Barbara Forbes, Zvi Gotheiner, K.J. Holmes, John Jasperse, Joanna Kotze, Nia Love, Juliette Mapp, Cori Olinghouse, Janet Panetta, Shelley Senter, Vicky Shick, RoseAnne Spradlin, Karinne Keithley Syers and Jesse Zarrit. These discussions addressed questions and ideas about dance and movement-based class through their own practices and histories. After the discussions attendants were invited to actively participate in smaller group conversations with the opportunity to share insights and proposals.

Gwen Welliver is a dancer, choreographer, and teacher. Welliver performed with Doug Varone and Dancers (’90-’00), was a recipient of a “Bessie” for Sustained Achievement (’00), and served as Rehearsal Director for the Trisha Brown Dance Company (’00-’07). Welliver is a 2013 New York Foundation for the Arts Fellow in Choreography. She has been a Movement Research faculty member since 1997 and currently teaches at Sarah Lawrence College.

In 1982, Danspace Project and Bennington College collaborated on “The Judson Project,” a series of performances dedicated to reconstructing Judson-era works with 14 Judson choreographers, including Edward Bhartonn, Remy Charlip, Lucinda Childs, Philip Corner, Brian De Palma, Judith Dunn, Simone Forti, Deborah Hay, Aileen Passloff, Steve Paxton, Yvonne Rainer, Carolee Schneemann, Elaine Summers, and James Waring. The Bennington College Judson Project also filmed interviews with many of the artists that were central to Judson Dance Theater. Danspace Project and Movement Research share a selection of these rarely-seen reconstructions and interviews in a special afternoon screening.

According to Chinese energetic, in October we are transitioning between the Earth and the Metal energy. The Earth corresponds to the Digestive System (stomach/pancreas/spleen), and the Metal to the Lungs/Large Intestine. It is about the energy coming back into the Earth and the ability to transform by letting go of what we don’t need internally and externally. The session will include a warm up, and a series of intuitive movement meditations to activate these energies, tapping into our immediate environment with our sensory apparatus and our experiential field.

This highly visual and visceral documentary investigates the creative life of Suzushi Hanayagi, a powerful, innovative, even radical Japanese dancer and choreographer. For over 20 years she was a close collaborator with and major influence on theater legend Robert Wilson, who referred to her simply as “my teacher”. When Wilson discovers Hanayagi living in an old-age home and suffering from Alzheimer’s, Wilson resolves to work with her once again. Poignant witness to the transition of a life from vibrancy to legacy, this film becomes the final collaboration between a great teacher and her most renowned student.

Creating Character Through Movement

By raising awareness of the physical possibilities in the body this workshop will encourage finding richer and more meaningful personal movement. Employing various processes used in dance theater practices we will search where movement starts and push the limits of where it can go.

Please join us for a discussion on the topic of parenting and its influence on one’s creative life. How can the journey of parenthood inspire and be additive to an artist’s lifestyle? Are there parenting challenges specific to the dance community? Is there anything we can do as a community to better support one another? We will share tips on how to find balance between our professional and private lives. Last year’s revival of the Movement Research Town Hall meeting dove into the nature and manner of movement research being conducted by our present-day artists community. Join Movement Research and its Artist Advisory Council for a follow-up discussion regarding sustainability as it relates to research, career, value and time.

PROSODIC BODY Workshop: Choreoprosodia (the fusion of movement and prosody)
These six workshops focus on the sonic properties of language exploring the correspondences between energy centers, hormonal secretion, seed movements, sonic harmony, and emotional and neurological impact. Spending time with each of the different phoneme-harmonic-compositions developed for the Phoneme Choir, we will use a ‘scientific methodology’ to differentiate and name how each affects individuals and inform us of their healing and performative properties.

Writing dance
Choreographer Jonathan Burrows leads a three day workshop investigating choreographic and compositional process, performance and philosophies, questioning how a dance or performance might be made and what it could communicate to somebody watching. Practical work will concentrate on short task-based exercises looking at how to define material and work with time, to hold the attention of an audience and invite them to care what happens next. Sessions will be punctuated also with discussion and viewpoints on other mediums and ways of working, asking all the time what dance can do and what it can’t.

The Lost, The Found and The Fantasy: Urban Meditation
Through an interdisciplinary approach, participants will work with excavating found images, phrases overheard on the bus, movement studies from the street and found sounds and texts to develop their own response to the city and its current dialogue with us. These found materials are things that pulled you towards them, attracted your attention, even if you are not completely sure why. From this fieldwork material, participants will work in the studio with further writing, movement and installation experiments to explore re-enlivening our city-life. Informal, “instant” showings link what has been found with a larger vision of what could be possible. Participants are asked to come to the studio with a scrap of conversation overheard publicly, a picture of a specific place or person in the city, a gesture or series of gestures that they observed in their everyday walks, a torn piece of text found on the street.
