Movement Research at the Judson Church – April 13, 2015

Featuring works by Erin Ellen Kelly, Elisa Osborne, Johanna Meyer, Jeanine Durning

Seed
Concept and Performance: Erin Ellen Kelly
Soundscape with field recordings: Nick Cave and Warren Ellis, and Max Richter

The starting point: the elemental qualities of landscapes. This improvisation explores water, frozen to steam. What characters emerge?

Thanks Juan Merchan, Ophra Wolf, Geoff Kuffner, Baptiste Ex, for lending an outside eye and feedback.

Hand-Made
By Johanna S. Meyer

Tonight’s performance is a work in progress started in the Liftoff Residency. This solo was made bringing different artists into the studio to direct my material. Later I will direct this material on performers and make a group piece. Currently Angelica Soledad, Paola Lopez and Nibia Pastrana Santiago have participated.

Jeanine Durning, with Julian Barnett and Molly Poerstel
“The pleasure is to our purpose, but the object is purposeless.” Immanuel Kant
“Keep on with the force don’t stop. Don’t stop ’til you get enough.” Michael Jackson
“Unfortunately I am afraid, as always, of going on.” Samuel Beckett

From Jeanine: In the summer of 2013, I began a research into the practice of what I bluntly call nonstop moving. For the purposes of Judson tonight, Molly, Julian and I will be sharing and framing some of the tools and strategies of this practice, which normally lasts up to about an hour. Nonstop moving is in direct continuity to the practice of nonstop speaking that I began in 2008 and then started to publicly perform in 2010 as the work I call inging. The term nonstop is a decidedly chosen one, as opposed to perpetual or continual, because it points to the critical nature of what it takes to keep going in the midst of questions, doubts, and inevitable failures and limitations.Nonstopping accepts, as a practice, our multiplicity, our foibles, our repetitions, our desires, our potentialities, our perceptions, our paradoxes – all sitting up against each other, colliding and combining, tracing and erasing, creating and cleaving meaning.

Vulnerable Systems: Moving Beyond Sustainability
Conceived in partnership with Jennifer Monson and Movement Research
November 5 TUE 6pm-8pm
Gibney Dance Center 890 Broadway, 5th Floor
FREE
The reality of climate change has brought an increased awareness around the fragility of our environment and a heightened interest in sustainable practices. How do we move beyond sustainability towards resiliency, a term currently in broad use in the social sciences? How do we address the current crisis from its roots, rather than perpetuating unworkable systems? Is change a value or an action? How can our practices within the dance community serve as models for adapting to change? We will discuss different framings of sustainability from the perspectives of various fields, including social science, economics, and urban ecology in a roundtable conversation which invites the dance community and the larger public to explore concrete ways to create resilient systems in their own communities and beyond.

Classes this week with…

Nia Love. Morning Class
Monday, Wednesday, Friday. 10am-12pm. $14
Eden’s Expressway, 537 Broadway
Class starts with across the floor rhythmic gaits that investigate independence in the body. Stacking sequential rhythmic patterns build on cardio and core work that emphasizes a feminine-derived energy where conical movement attaches to the base of the spine and radiates up through the core and out to the extremities. Center floor exercises focus on skeletal-muscular motion; rotations, isolations, and weight shifts explore a more grounded approach. The incorporation of a more crisp sensibility to an urban approach that partners up with African, postmodern, Butoh, funk and blues sensibilities. The goal: to break down inhibitions, fine tune modern techniques, yet approach dance with a sense of abandonment!

Levi Gonzalez. Morning Class.
Tuesday & Thursday. 10:00am-12:00pm. $14.
Danspace Project, 131 E. 10th Street.

Using the morning technique class structure as a model, this class will focus on dance as a physical, conceptual, and experiential practice, with an emphasis on cultivating presence inside of the forms. Class often begins with imagery and gentle preparation culled from various body-based somatic modalities that access our awareness of the organs, the skeleton, gravity, and energetic pathways through the architecture of the body and into the space. Class may also include technical exercises, choreographic structures, improvisations, and performance constructs, taking our time to engage with these materials with precision, imagination, and a thorough and informed sense of embodiment.

Moving from Touch
Touch comes in many shapes and sizes. From a hand resting on a hand or arm, to a back resting against a back breathing together. We are all born knowing experientially the gift of touch. When we give touch, we receive touch in return – an exchange of information from body to body – reciprocity. Touch can draw our attention from deep inside the body to the surface, to skin, and touch can take our attention from skin to depth, addressing and integrating fundamental facets of our being and giving us information about body systems, movement qualities and thought processes, as well as opening spaces for imagination. In this workshop we will explore moving from touch.
