SUNDAY PROCESS LAB with JOANNA KOTZE AND SHELLEY SENTER

Eden’s Expressway, 537 Broadway

SUNDAY PROCESS LAB with LARISSA VELEZ-JACKSON
April 6 SUN 230-530pm $5
Eden’s Expressway, 537 Broadway
This Sunday Process Lab is concerned with my working methodologies that identify, multiply, and disrupt meaning in the moment. Using whatever faculties most readily available to the practitioner in real time–movement, speech, vocal toning, song, writing–we will research the ways in which forms can be in dialogue, competition, and support of one another. MULTIPLY YOUR MAKING CAPACITY OUT OF THIN AIR BY STAYING INSIDE THE EXPERIENCE AND SQUAWKING! Using my (non) fictional improvisation methodology, the Star Crap Method, we will place perception, action and meta-commentary on a horizontal plane and then bust out some hot material on that plane, like it’s a stage, tailored to the practitioner’s exact specifications.

What is My Work? A workshop based on the format of a peer panel review
Facilitated by Larissa Velez-Jackson
Much value is placed on the idea of artwork that is at the cutting edge, with the words “pushing boundaries” emphasized in grants, applications and curating language. This conversation examines what might be meant by “pushing boundaries”? How important is it in the creative process and its outcome? Is the point of view of the artist different from the one of the audience when determining something as “pushing boundaries”? What assumptions or cultural contexts are assumed to establish these boundaries? Are there other ways to value contemporary work?

Upcoming Workshops and Studies Projects.

Wednesday April 17. Studies Project: “Pushing Boundaries.”
6:15pm
Gibney Dance Center
Conceived by Ori Flomin
With panelists Arthur Aviles, Jennifer Wright Cook, Colleen Thomas, Larissa Velez-Jackson and more

Embodying and Exchanging Energy
This workshop will explore how individuals and groups embody and exchange “energy.” We will keep an open mind about how energy is present, sensed, and a source in us: inspiration, creativity, motivation, connection, collaboration, presence, emotion, spirituality – energy forms that exist in our physical and non physical experience, shaping our interactions. Guided experiences and improvisational forms bring our heightened awareness and dimensional bodies into a potent energetic state to create a supportive and collaborative environment, leading us to shared dancing, creativity, and discourse.

Classes this week with…

Jon Kinzel. Technique / EXERCISES IN COMPOSITION.
Monday, Wednesday, Friday. 10:00am-12:00pm. $14.
Movement Research at Eden’s Expressway, 537 Broadway, 4th Floor.

This class is designed to access multiple threads at once such as greater range of motion and articulation, isolated and momentum-driven movement forms, rhythmic and kinesthetic intelligence, sense of scale, ascent and descent, injury prevention, alignment, personal and musical expression, and dancing that supports a balanced square orientation over a vertical axis while traversing through space, and shifting off center, in a mode that reflects a play between athleticism, performance, and a particular disposition.

David Thomson. Morning Class.
Tuesday & Thursday. 10:00am-12:00pm. $14.
Danspace Project, 131 E. 10th Street.

Class will be taught by Kayvon Pourazar on April 16 & 18. This class will focus on alignment, weight, clarity of momentum, and breath. Using influences from Chi Gong, Alexander, yoga, modern and postmodern constructs to release the joints, connect to the floor, lengthen the spine, activate the senses and warm the body. We continue the exploration in the second half through a combination of improvisation, phrase material and other choreographic structures to expand the experience of dancing.

Monday December 3. Movement Research Fall Festival 2012 Studies Project:
Let Me In Let Me In Or I’ll Blow This House Down.

Curators on Process and the Matter of Inclusion.
Part of the Movement Research Fall Festival 2012: back to basic.
7pm. Josie’s, 520 East 6th Street (between Avenues A and B).
Moderated by Juliette Mapp and Jen Rosenblit
FREE

To feel a part of something. Communal, to have community. To be asked, invited in, to ask to be invited in. Access, entry. While the role of curator and the process of curation holds as much artistry as the making of dance and performance, we hone in on an equally important need for a touch of transparency surrounding the presentation of dance and the body. What issues and concerns arise inside of a shifting community where representation is crucial for belonging and sustainable support? What are we doing to reach out to more artists? Where are those artists? Who are those artists? What are the complexities that arise while supporting the sustainability of an artist? What responsibility do we have to an idea of cultivating and supporting “newness?” Where is the body inside all of this? How do we digest being on the inside or outside of something spiritually, aesthetically, emotionally and academically?

Participants include:
Ben Pryor/American Realness
Laurie Berg, Liliana Dirks-Goodman/AUNTS
Rebecca Brooks
Barbara Bryan
Matthew Lyons/The Kitchen

We are holograms where each part is a whole. We are quadratic when we answer questions with neither a yes nor a no. We are organized when we drop $200 on the complete Kvissle desk organizer set from Ikea including cable management casket, letter tray and ubiquitous box with cork lid, set of 4. Drawing on my extensive work with Anne Teresa deKeersmaeker’s Rosas as well as a host of others, this workshop will take a look what we’re doing with all of our dancing stuff. What’s my material? What’s a tool? Am I building something? Where can i put it? Does that make me a craftsman? Can all of it be laser rendered holographically, smudged in to so many shades of gray or finely dismembered and stored in sleek interlocking cork boxes, set of 4?

Classes This Week With…

DD Dorvillier. A Morning Thing .
Monday, Wednesday, Friday. 10:00am-12:00pm. $14.
Danspace Project, 131 E. 10th Street.

Some daily practice in the morning, to wake up, or feel up, or tender up, or just get into your day, or your week, or your/our entire future. A little different every day, warming up with some SRT-based, fake MB-based, semi-aerobics, ballet, and mofongo yoga. Depends on us. Then an hour devoted to serious moving with eyes closed in partners, with brief exchanges of talking about our experience.

Stacy Matthew Spence. Morning Class.
Tuesday and Thursday. 10:00am-12:00pm. $14.
Danspace Project, 131 E. 10th Street.

This technique class begins with explorations of the body that allow us to discover and notice the use of weight and momentum, clear alignment, clarity of initiation, and direction of energy. From there the class will build upon itself to more complex coordinations that lead to an opening of the body and an expansion of possibilities as we move through movement material.

Geared for dance practitioners, the work draws on different modes of live performance, across disciplines. The two days are structured around a sequence of explorations, performance, reflective actions and discussion. Please bring in 1-3 minutes of your material for starters.
