Classes this week with…
Nia Love. Morning Class
Monday, Wednesday, Friday 10:00am – 12:00pm. $14
Eden’s Expressway, 537 Broadway
Class starts with across the floor rhythmic gaits that investigate independence in the body. Stacking sequential rhythmic patterns build on cardio and core work that emphasizes a feminine-derived energy where conical movement attaches to the base of the spine and radiates up through the core and out to the extremities. Center floor exercises focus on skeletal-muscular motion; rotations, isolations, and weight shifts explore a more grounded approach. The incorporation of a more crisp sensibility to an urban approach that partners up with African, postmodern, Butoh, funk and blues sensibilities. The goal: to break down inhibitions, fine tune modern techniques, yet approach dance with a sense of abandonment!

Levi Gonzalez. Morning Class.
Tuesday & Thursday. 10:00am – 12:00pm. $14.
Danspace Project, 131 E. 10th Street.

Using the morning technique class structure as a model, this class will focus on dance as a physical, conceptual, and experiential practice, with an emphasis on cultivating presence inside of the forms. Class often begins with imagery and gentle preparation culled from various body-based somatic modalities that access our awareness of the organs, the skeleton, gravity, and energetic pathways through the architecture of the body and into the space. Class may also include technical exercises, choreographic structures, improvisations, and performance constructs, taking our time to engage with these materials with precision, imagination, and a thorough and informed sense of embodiment.

12-2pm. First Park, 33 E 1st St

Based on essential principles of impulse, control, opposition and rhythm, the workshop engages participants through a series of exercises developed over the past fifteen years. These physical actions function like a language to enable communication between us. We search for the honest smile, the smile that can release unnecessary tension and give the body its freedom. This work was developed to train the presence of the actor, but it may be useful for other artists and for anyone who wants to find greater awareness through the body. The precision of the exercises and their range of dynamic qualities help bring density to the performer’s body, fostering lightness and the ability to be decided in-the-moment.

Prior to tonight’s program, Movement Research (MR) will solicit questions from the greater MR community regarding the imprint that Judson Dance Theater (1962-64) continues to make on contemporary performance. These questions will be shared with the audience, debated, discussed, and voted upon. Ultimately, four questions will be selected by attendees as focus topics for further investigation by artists nominated to lead a series of week-long performance laboratories and open rehearsals at the New Museum. This event is presented as part of “Movement Research in Residence at the New Museum: Rethinking the Imprint of Judson Dance Theater Fifty Years Later.”

Judson artists themselves were very involved in various mediums, including film. None more so than Yvonne Rainer, who went from choreographer to filmmaker to choreographer again. This screening features her seminal film of a performance of a rehearsal, LIVES OF PERFORMERS, bridging the gap between her extensive performance work and the film work that was soon to follow.

This class is open to everyone interested in sharing movement experiences. We will practice listening to our instincts as movers and disregarding all preconceived ideas of how one “should” move in space. The participants will explore their own creative movement potential by releasing personal memories and perceptions of their own environment by utilizing the power of the group to build a collective experience. This class is about experiencing the joy for moving and dancing to become totally physical and present, yet connected to our internal states.
