Sunday Process Lab with Molly  Lieber and Eleanor Smith
Sunday, September 21
5:00 pm-8:00 pm $5
Movement Research at Eden’s Expressway
RSVP Here

Sunday Process Labs are a series of three-hour, low-cost sessions on Sunday evenings, providing an opportunity for a dynamic exchange amongst peers in a lab-type setting. Sessions are facilitated by movement-based artists who will share their individual creative practices and process.

This lab explores finding things of value to us as dancers and choreographers through a variety of improvisational scores based on the duet form, with some concentration on tactile interaction with the space and each other. We will look at improvisation as a private act in a performative setting and as a public act in a private setting, and on the duet form as a meeting point of these two realms, due to its propensity for both intimacy and expression.

SUNDAY PROCESS LAB with JOANNA KOTZE AND SHELLEY SENTER
March 30 SUN 5-8pm $5
Eden’s Expressway, 537 Broadway
Joanna Kotze and Shelley Senter will come together to share their ideas, practices and processes in this collaborative lab. Joanna delves into the design of the body and its potential within any given moment, looking at the forces through the legs to access a wide range of movement, challenging habits and discovering new performance possibilities. Shelley’s interests include critiquing sensation, spatial support, looking at movement as behavior as well as architecture, and addressing un/sub/consciousness, particularly in “the use of the eyes (notice I did not say ‘gaze.’)” Through both movement and dialogue, Joanna and Shelley will exchange information with you and each other about how movement, specificity and potential in the body play important roles in their teaching and creative process.

WORKSHOP with STEPANIE SKURA
Open Source Forms: Freedom + Rigor + Courage
April 2-4 WED-FRI 2:30-5:30pm $100
Eden’s Expressway, 537 Broadway
Cross-fertilizations and deep commonalities of releasing technique and creative process, with an ultimate goal of individual creative empowerment. Tools to navigate the subconscious, open the voice — literally and figuratively — trust our inner world, access technique as resource and find courage to transcend it. Skura instigated Open Source Forms in 2009, drawing from decades of research and practice in radical composition techniques, and 12 years as core Skinner Releasing teacher. [Bring paper & pens for writing & drawing.]

SUNDAY PROCESS LAB with VANESSA ANSPAUGH
March 16 SUN 5-8pm $5
Eden’s Expressway, 537 Broadway
Archiving the present
This workshop considers movement-based performance as a tool for broadening ones own artistic practice. Starting from “now” we will explore the myriad understandings of presence. We will look to the sensorial, relational, personal, political, seasonal, annual etc. to uncover the layers of what constitutes “this moment.” Bringing the outside in and the inside out we will make a piece together in 3 hours. We will construct, compose, dismantle and play, coating layer upon layer to investigate the idea of “dance as a document” of our time spent together.

technical (and) improvisation work
We’ll try to improve the fluidity of our actions by 1) establishing a purposeful and clear relation with the floor, and 2) integrating all parts of the body in action. The kind of movement I am interested in is first functional, then expressive as a consequence. In these sessions we will try to understand the link between functionality and expressive power. We will often use improvisation instead of set movements in order to understand and apply technical mechanisms in a conscious way; at the same time, a higher technical awareness will allow us to improvise more fluently and with more tools at our disposal.

Judson Dance Theater in Context 1963-1965
A Slide Lecture by Barbara Moore.

6:30pm. Anthology Film Archives, 32 2nd Avenue.
$10/$8 students/seniors/Friends of Movement Research/$6 Anthology Members

Judson Dance Theater is renowned as the seedbed of post-modern dance. The performances and activity that transpired, however, encompassed a wide variety of creative personalities and styles. Non-dancers such as visual artists and musicians were an influential, integrated contingent and active collaborators with trained dancers and each other. Audiences in the close-knit art scene, much smaller and geographically cohesive than it is today, also represented a diverse cross-section of New York’s creative communities.

This slide lecture, composed of historic photographs by Peter Moore, mines his remarkable archive for evidence of this inter-connectedness both within Judson Dance Theater itself and in relation to various artistic practices outside of the group proper.

Classes This Week With…

Kayvon Pourazar. Morning  Class .
Monday, Wednesday, Friday. 10:00am-12:00pm. $14.
Movement Research at Eden’s Expressway,
537 Broadway, 4th Floor.
This class will focus on allowing the inherent dynamic and organizational logic of the moving body to become more present in our dancing. We will encourage our instructive and directive intentions to succumb their influence to a listening and responding/responsible self. Our warm up will include physical situations and exercises that will help us understand and become familiar with our range of effective force, momentum, coordination, weight and balance. In turn, we will be prepared to dive into phrase material that emphasizes kinetic and energetic simplicity within more complex and multilayered forms.

Stacy Matthew Spence. Morning Class.
Tuesday and Thursday. 10:00am-12:00pm. $14.
Danspace Project, 131 E. 10th Street.

This technique class begins with explorations of the body that allow us to discover and notice the use of weight and momentum, clear alignment, clarity of initiation, and direction of energy. From there the class will build upon itself to more complex coordinations that lead to an opening of the body and an expansion of possibilities as we move through movement material.

Body Mind World, Movement & Language Improvisation
Sometimes our words don’t have access to what we know in our bones, while our dancing doesn’t have access to what’s on our minds. In this workshop we will explore the synergy between movement and language to engage with subject matter that interests us. The class will include warm-ups to awaken our kinetic juices, and focused stream of consciousness writing to put us in touch with our wild thoughts and observations. We will divide our class time between purely improvising with movement, talking together about whatever has been on our minds, and improvising combining moving and speaking.

Sunday September 16. Judson @ 50:
MR in Residence at the New Museum
Movement Research: Proposals for Rethinking the Imprint of Judson Dance Theater Fifty Years Later

info@movementresearch.org
Moderated by Carla Peterson

Prior to tonight’s program, Movement Research (MR) will solicit questions from the greater MR community regarding the imprint that Judson Dance Theater (1962–64) continues to make on contemporary performance. These questions will be shared with the audience, debated, discussed, and voted upon. Ultimately, four questions will be selected by attendees as focus topics for further investigation by artists nominated to lead a series of week-long performance laboratories and open rehearsals at the New Museum. This event is presented as part of “Movement Research in Residence at the New Museum: Rethinking the Imprint of Judson Dance Theater Fifty Years Later.”

Judson artists themselves were very involved in various mediums, including film. None more so than Yvonne Rainer, who went from choreographer to filmmaker to choreographer again. This class is open to everyone interested in sharing movement experiences. We will practice listening to our instincts as movers and disregarding all preconceived ideas of how one “should” move in space. The participants will explore their own creative movement potential by releasing personal memories and perceptions of their own environment by utilizing the power of the group to build a collective experience. This class is about experiencing the joy for moving and dancing to become totally physical and present, yet connected to our internal states.

Thursday October 6. STUDIES PROJECT: Conversation on Dance and Consciousness
6pm. Gibney Dance Center, 890 Broadway, Studio 4
FREE

Conceived of and Moderated by Vanessa Justice
A conversation among choreographers, philosophers and performers on the nature of consciousness and how dance as an artistic practice acts as experiential research into this fundamentally human yet indeterminate and far-ranging territory. In addition to gathering different perspectives on the subject, some questions will be considered: How does dance affect current philosophical thinking on consciousness? How do choreographers and performers engage with theory on the subject? How have personal experiences and artistic practices contributed to private and collective understanding and development of consciousness? How can these experiences enter into broader discourse on the subject? Participants in this conversation include Alva Noë (philosopher and author of Out of Our Heads), Michelle Boulé (dance artist), Miguel Gutierrez (choreographer), RoseAnne Spradlin (choreographer), and others. Thanks to Gina Gibney Dance Center for the donation of space.

Workshop with Jonathan Burrows
MONDAY October 31 – WEDNESDAY November 2
12-3pm
Avenue C Studio
$75/$30 drop-in
Writing dance
Choreographer Jonathan Burrows leads a three day workshop investigating choreographic and compositional process, performance and philosophies, questioning how a dance or performance might be made and what it could communicate to somebody watching. Practical work will concentrate on short task-based exercises looking at how to define material and work with time, to hold the attention of an audience and invite them to care what happens next. Sessions will be punctuated also with discussion and viewpoints on other mediums and ways of working, asking all the time what dance can do and what it can’t.
Register HERE.

Workshop with Jane Gabriels
SATURDAY November 5
5-8pm
Movement Research at Eden’s Expressway
$30
The Lost, The Found and The Fantasy: Urban Meditation
Through an interdisciplinary approach, participants will work with excavating found images, phrases overheard on the bus, movement studies from the street and found sounds and texts to develop their own response to the city and its current dialogue with us. These found materials are things that pulled you towards them, attracted your attention, even if you are not completely sure why. From this fieldwork material, participants will work in the studio with further writing, movement and installation experiments to explore re-enlivening our city-life. Informal, “instant” showings link what has been found with a larger vision of what could be possible. Participants are asked to come to the studio with a scrap of conversation overheard publicly, a picture of a specific place or person in the city, a gesture or series of gestures that they observed in their everyday walks, a torn piece of text found on the street.
