Jan. 20th Studies Project: The Role of Class in Current Dance Practices

Organized by MR in collaboration with Beth Gill, Lance Gries, Eva Karczag and Gwen Welliver

What role does “class” play in current dance practices? As contemporary teaching artists attempt to articulate new methods of transmitting knowledge through the body, so too are performers of contemporary dance and performance work drifting away from relying exclusively on traditional and codifiable techniques. How can we get the most out of the structures that exist and/or create new ones as we relate these models to the way people make work now? This conversation with teaching artists and practitioners will engage these seemingly intangible questions with concrete practices and proposals.

Participating speakers include:

technical (and) improvisation work
We’ll try to improve the fluidity of our actions by 1) establishing a purposeful and clear relation with the floor, and 2) integrating all parts of the body in action. The kind of movement I am interested in is first functional, then expressive as a consequence. In these sessions we will try to understand the link between functionality and expressive power. We will often use improvisation instead of set movements in order to understand and apply technical mechanisms in a conscious way; at the same time, a higher technical awareness will allow us to improvise more fluently and with more tools at our disposal.

Classes this week with…
Nia Love. Morning Class
Monday, Wednesday, Friday 10:00am – 12:00pm. $14
Eden’s Expressway, 537 Broadway
Class starts with across the floor rhythmic gaits that investigate independence in the body. Stacking sequential rhythmic patterns build on cardio and core work that emphasizes a feminine-derived energy where conical movement attaches to the base of the spine and radiates up through the core and out to the extremities. Center floor exercises focus on skeletal-muscular motion; rotations, isolations, and weight shifts explore a more grounded approach. The incorporation of a more crisp sensibility to an urban approach that partners up with African, postmodern, Butoh, funk and blues sensibilities. The goal: to break down inhibitions, fine tune modern techniques, yet approach dance with a sense of abandonment!

Levi Gonzalez. Morning Class.
Tuesday & Thursday. 10:00am – 12:00pm. $14.
Danspace Project, 131 E. 10th Street.

Using the morning technique class structure as a model, this class will focus on dance as a physical, conceptual, and experiential practice, with an emphasis on cultivating presence inside of the forms. Class often begins with imagery and gentle preparation culled from various body-based somatic modalities that access our awareness of the organs, the skeleton, gravity, and energetic pathways through the architecture of the body and into the space. Class may also include technical exercises, choreographic structures, improvisations, and performance constructs, taking our time to engage with these materials with precision, imagination, and a thorough and informed sense of embodiment.

A playful and rigorous dialogue-in-action about space, time, movement, and the innate desire to compose our experience. Ori Flomin. Morning Class
Monday, Wednesday, Friday. 10am-12pm. $14
Eden’s Expressway, 537 Broadway
The class encourages students to increase their movement possibilities and take risks in dancing by maximizing the benefits of the warmed-up body. The warm-up moves smoothly from floor to standing with a strong focus on anatomy to strengthen connections of correct alignment with an increase of fluidity in the joints.. Dancers will develop an understanding of the connections between their body and the floor, and will learn how to use momentum and breath to explore physically-full dancing with the least amount of muscular tension. During phrase work, dancers will learn how to incorporate information from the warm-up to execute more complicated sequences.

Michelle Boulé. Morning Class.
Tuesday & Thursday. 10:00am-12:00pm. $14.
Danspace Project, 131 E. 10th Street.

We’ll look at different ways of approaching ‘dance technique’… energy systems, physical systems, architectural-object-spatial relationships, contact and non-contact partner and solo improvisations. I take my current somatic, dance, and performance interests and apply them to a movement practice. A maximally informed approach to dancing. A space of respectful, creative permission for everyone’s body. A time to really let things move in all senses of the word… in relationship with and beyond oneself.

Afternoon Classes with Jeremy Nelson.
October 14-18 Monday – Friday 12:30pm-2:30pm
Avenue C Studio, 55 Avenue C
$14 per class, Movement Research Class Cards applicable
The workshop will draw on Nelson’s 25 years of continuing study in the work of Barbara Mahler and Susan Klein, and by more recent studies in other techniques such as Alexander Technique, Feldenkrais Method® and Body-Mind Centering®. We will begin with simple exercises and stretches that encourage mobility and suppleness in the superficial muscles, establish clear connections and directions through the bones, and create a dynamic and weighted relationship with the floor. The class will also incorporate a variety of approaches including some improvisation and hands-on work in partners that help deepen our awareness and give us the opportunity to really experience some of these ideas in a physical way. We will then take our work into very simple activities and movements in order to try and integrate this new awareness into our body’s movement patterns, and then build up to phrases of movement that involve moving more fully and dynamically.

Sunday Process Lab with Antonia Baehr
Sunday, October 20  5-8pm
Eden’s Expressway, 537 Broadway
$5
In this workshop, Antonia Baehr proposes to share an artistic practice around the performance LAUGH. It is for all public. LAUGH is a piece about laughing as laughing. For the length of the piece Antonia Baehr explores this expression as a sovereign entity, in separation from causal baggage; jokes, tickles, narrative, humor, joy, looking at the thing itself: the sound and shape, the music, choreography and drama, the rhythm and the gesture of laughter. Comedy is not her goal, but contamination is an unavoidable by-product that sometimes contagiously trades sides of the ‘fourth wall’.

Authentic Movement
A witness and a mover agree to enter a mystery. The mover, with eyes closed, self-directed, explores impulses in the present moment. The witness with eyes open watches the movement and holds the intention to support the mover’s experience. Personal imagery, sensation, emotion and the ineffable emerge to consciousness with movement as the source. Authentic Movement provides a powerful context to discover meaning or non-meaning from experience and to retrieve seminal material for the artist. After moving and witnessing, a process of speaking, moving, drawing or writing recalls the experiences. The ritual has the intention of maintaining the internal efficacy of what just happened.

Beauty, awkwardness, form, strength, weakness. Intended to be both laboratory and class, the sessions will be time for us to delve into the design of the body and its potential within a given moment. Through stretch and placement, technique studies, movement phrases and open practices, habits will be discovered, challenged, and seen through a new lens. A concentration on the forces through the legs will lead to finding more range in separate body parts and ways to use weight into the floor. My hope is for you to feel present and challenged and to leave class with a few answers and more questions.

A space of respectful, creative permission for everyone’s body. A time to really let things move in all senses of the word… in relationship with and beyond oneself.

Why I am not a painter
This is a writing workshop. It is open to anyone who wants to play with words, to see what they can do, and how. But it is made with dance-artists in mind. How do words live in time and space, whether on the stage, the page or in the mind? Critical writing, creative writing, performance texts… are they really such different creatures? Does a dancer have a particular way of approaching language? What about a writer who spends so much of her time watching dancers? So many questions. We’ll spend our time looking for answers, individually and as a group.

Classes this week with…

Levi Gonzalez. Morning Class.
Monday, Wednesday, Friday. 10:00am-12:00pm. $14.
Movement Research at Eden’s Expressway, 537 Broadway, 4th Floor.

Class will be taught by Vicky Shick on May 17
Using the morning technique class structure as a model, this class will focus on dance as a physical, conceptual, and experiential practice, with an emphasis on the cultivation of presence inside of the forms. Class will begin with imagery and gentle preparation culled from various bodywork modalities that access our awareness of the organs, the skeleton, gravity, and energetic pathways through the architecture of the body and into the space. Class will expand into technical exercises, choreographic structures, improvisations, and performance constructs, exploring ways to engage with the material through precise and imaginative means. No class May 27.

Jennifer Nugent. Morning Class.
Tuesday & Thursday. 10:00am-12:00pm. $14.
Danspace Project, 131 E. 10th Street.

Using improvisational and set warm-ups, we will focus on the volume and weight inside the body and its relationship to the floor. Exercises that bring awareness to the feet, spine, and pelvic floor encourage the feeling of release in the limbs, allowing us to fall and suspend off-center, simultaneously finding a grounded flexible base of support. Using these physical tools, we will explore sensation, instinct, and the inherent musicality inside the body, phrasing. All the while dancing, we will work toward a more grounded and direct approach to movement.

Studies Project This Week.

Tuesday March 19. Studies Project: Performing the Changing City: Public space, transformative events and creative action in New York.
7pm
Hemispheric Institute of Performance and Politics
Organized by Abigail Levine and Paloma McGregor
With panelists luciana achugar, Randy Martin, Jenny Romaine, and Niegel Smith
FREE

“…careening astronauts and bank clerks glancing at the clock before lunch; actresses cowling at light-ringed mirrors and freight elevator operators grinding a thumbful of grease on a steel handle: student riots; that dark women in bodegas shook their heads last week because in six months prices have risen outlandishly; how coffee tastes after you’ve held it in your mouth, cold, a whole minute.” -Samuel R. Delany, Dhalgren

Hurricanes, transit strikes, planned and unplanned explosions, occupations… Bike lanes, bus lanes, protest pens, command centers… Pedestrian zones, redevelopment zones, disaster zones… How is the landscape of our city changing and what are the possibilities for creative response? Looking at the shifting social, economic, and literal topography of our city through the frame of transformative events and policy decisions, we ask the question: what is the role of artists, activists, and all citizens in conceiving, creating, and defending (a notion of) public space? And conversely, what is the role of public space as a partner in creative expression and action? luciana achugar, Randy Martin, Jenny Romaine, and Niegel Smith reflect on our shifting urban landscape and offer opportunities to imagine how we might enact our city in the future.

John Jasperse. Morning Class.
Tuesday and Thursday. 10:00am-12:00pm. $14.
Danspace Project, 131 E. 10th Street.

Movement Practice
The class will begin with an anatomy focused warm-up, drawn from both traditional and recent techniques, aiming to align and re-pattern the energy flow in the body in order to find support from the floor and our connection into space. We will begin with simple movements, improvisation scores, exercises, and sequences gradually building in complexity. We will learn movement material, some from Jasperse’s work and some created for these explorations. Our goal will be to integrate energetic patterning explored in the first portion of class and to play with different manners of experiencing and embodying the choreographic material.
