We will be showing material developed over the last few weeks during a Lower Manhattan Cultural Council Process Space residency at Building 110: LMCC’s Art Center on Governor’s Island towards a new work to premiere at New York Live Arts in May 2014.

John Jasperse is a dance artist. He has been living and working in NYC since graduating from Sarah Lawrence College in 1985. He has created 15 evening-length works, several short works and commissions for other companies including Baryshnikov’s White Oak Dance Project, Batsheva Dance Company, and Lyon Opera Ballet. His work has been presented by various venues in New York City and on tour throughout the U.S. and Europe, as well as in Brazil, Chile, Israel, Japan and Panama. Jasperse was awarded a 2011 U.S. Artist Brooks Hopkins Fellow and a Bessie Award in recognition of his body of work.

Jen Rosenblit has been working on making dances in NYC since 2005. Rosenblit is from rural Maine, which feels important in regards to understanding time passing. In NYC she teaches improvisation and performance independently, through CLASSCLASSCLASS and through Movement Research. Jen has been a teaching artist at Bowdoin College, Hampshire College, Hollins University and University of Massachusetts Amherst and has done lecture demonstrations at both Yale and Harvard on the improvisational and performative body. Rosenblit has worked extensively with performer Addys Gonzalez over the past ten years, was a 2009 Fresh Tracks Artist and a recipient of the 2012 Grant to Artists from the Foundation of Contemporary Arts. Her recent works, That Sick Sound, Everlast and So Badly, When Them, and In Mouth have located a space for being with audience in a contemplative theatricality. Rosenblit is currently interested in an improvisational approach to choreographic thought and ways of structuring bodies as they fall out of relation aesthetically and spiritually, locating more potent ways of being together. www.bottomheavies.blogspot.com

In this study I investigate ways to give visibility to the intangible accumulation of memories and information processed by my body. Understanding how presence and intimacy unveil along the performance is part of my research.

Cristiane Bouger is a 2012 Movement Research Artist-in-Residence and a 2012-2013 Performa Magazine Writer-in-Residence. Her interdisciplinary work reveals existential examinations reflecting upon the female body, desire, cultural conducts, behavior and symbols, biography and fiction. Over the last several years, I have begun to explore and embody the works of the early German Expressionist dancers as well as 20th Century dancers from the U.S. as seen on film. I have done this not to reconstruct historical dances, but to learn the earlier dancers’ interpretation and translation of the world in physical language and to then re-translate this into a contemporary context. This exploration has made me more acutely aware of partnering space and the architectural elements in movement and visual images these may create, than before. My work tonight explores these ideas.

Diana Sherwood has been a member of the Rudy Perez Performance Ensemble and currently divides her time between NY and LA.

4Chambers will be sited on Governors Island this summer. The piece takes place in four discreet rooms referencing the heart. Tonight we give a taste of two of these chambers blended together for Judson.

Jody Oberfelder has been making work in New York for several decades. She has sung in a rock band, choreographed an array of boldly physical dances including ‘Approaching Climax’, ‘Throb’, and ‘The Story Thus Far’, ‘The Title Comes Last’, and directed theater and opera, most recently, Stravinsky’s ‘A Soldier’s Tale’ and Purcell’s ‘Dido & Aeneas’. With a keen eye for the visual, she has also created eight dance films. 4Chambers is her first installation piece. It will premiere this summer on Governors Island for three weekends in July. Transforming Officers House #15 into a four chambered heart with arteries and veins, participants will monitor their own heart while traversing through it. Enrico D. Wey’s work has been on view at Danspace, New Museum, DTW, and St. Ann’s Warehouse Puppet Lab. Wey was a 2012 Movement Research Festival co-curator and has worked with Milka Djordjevich, Trajal Harrell, Tara O’Con, Walter Dundervill, Yvonne Meier, and for Ishmael Houston-Jones in the Bessie award-winning reconstruction of THEM (PS122, Pompidou Center, TanzImAugust, REDCAT). He has been a member of Handspring Puppet Company (South Africa) since 2004, puppeteering in Tall Horse (BAM) and in William Kentridge’s Il Ritorno d’Ulisse (SF MOMA, Theater der Welt, Edinburgh International Festival). After originating the lead role of “Joey” in the Tony Award-winning play, War Horse, he collaborated in …or and animal… at American Realness and with Jon Kinzel at Danspace. He was last seen in Little Lord’s Pocahontas at Bushwick Starr and The OUTS Chanukah Special.

Abby Zbikowski received her MFA in choreography from The Ohio State University, where she currently teaches full time in the Department of Dance, and makes work with her company, the new utility, that questions the role of movement in dance and the use of form. She holds a BFA in dance from Temple University and post-graduation worked with Philadelphia-based artists George Alley/Alley Ink Dance and Charles O. Anderson/dance theatre X, and is a current performer/collaborator with the Columbus, OH based Baker & Tarpaga Dance Project. As a choreographer, Abby’s work has been presented at DNA’s Raw Material in NYC, and the nEW Festival, Philly Fringe, Collage Festival, and New Edge Mix series in Philadelphia, among others.

How Beautiful, these strange ways is a new approach to musical theater that incorporates both traditional and experimental movement with body voice to create a “state” to support the text narrative.

Michael Freeman is a theater artist and writer. He is the recipient of the Richard Porter Leach Fellowship for the Arts and the Nicholas Pekearo Endowed Scholarship for Creative Writing. His work has been supported by NYFA, The Dramatists Guild of America, PEN Writers Fund, and the Authors League Fund. His first choreography/grant was in the Young Dancers in Bryant Park Series. His choreography has been shown at the Hot Festival, FUSE HERE Arts Center, HOWL Festival, Mulberry Street Theater New Steps Series, Dance Conversations at the Flea, 24 hour durational performance festival in Toronto, Toronto Festival of Clowns, the Duplex, the PIT, and many others. He has also directed for puppeteer Ralph Lee and musician Robert Jackson’s performing companies.

Tumi Johnson was raised in Ibadan, Nigeria and Nashville, Tennessee. A former Presidential Scholar in the Arts, Tumi has since had the opportunity to work and dance with choreographers including Liz Lerman, Alexandra Beller, Fiona Alderman, Deborah Silver, and Shani Aduculesi. In the fall of 2011, Tumi moved to Paris and spent 6 months in France working on refining her ‘poem dances’: solo dance creations that are crafted from original poetry. Tumi currently lives in Brooklyn and works both as a professional dancer as well as a holistic physician. www.tumijohnson.com

A full length presentation will be shown in Philadelphia as a part of Hybridge Arts Collective’s Blueprint Breakout Series at the end of June.

Stuart Meyers is a multi-disciplinary artist bridging the gaps between dance, theatre, and the visual arts. Currently based in Philadelphia, he is a recent graduate of Boston University’s School of Theatre where he earned his BFA. Studying in France, Italy, and at Connecticut College during undergrad, Stuart began to craft his provocative dance theatre pieces. This past summer, Stuart had the pleasure of apprenticing visionary theatre director Robert Wilson at The Watermill Center. Most recently, Stuart performed in Christopher William’s dance-opera Wolf-In-Skins. This showing of On The Rocks is a glimpse of a new full-length piece that will premiere in Philadelphia at the end of June as part of Hybridge Arts Collective’s Blueprint Breakout Series.

Catherine Galasso’s cross-disciplinary dance works have been performed at places like the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, Joyce SoHo, Danspace Project, Dixon Place, Harvard University’s Carpenter Center, the Santa Barbara Contemporary Arts Forum, Bibliotheque National de France (Paris), and SkenaUP International Theater Festival (Kosovo). Catherine has been an Artist in Residence with the LMCC, Headlands Center for the Arts, the Watermill Center, and ODC Theater (2008-12), and her most recent work, Bring On The Lumière!, about cinema pioneers the Lumière Brothers, was nominated for a San Francisco “Izzie.” Born in NY and raised in Italy, Catherine received a BA in Film from Cornell University and is currently the Marketing/Media Associate at Movement Research. Antonio Ramos was born and raised in Puerto Rico and later received a B.F.A. in Dance from SUNY Purchase College. Antonio has performed with Ballet Theatre of Puerto Rico, Ballet Hispanico of New York, Ballet Concierto and Ballet Municipal (Puerto Rico). In New York he has performed with choreographers Mark Dendy, Neil Greenberg, Kari Hooas, Luis Lara, Jeremy Nelson, Stephen Petronio, Merian Soto, Kevin Wynn, Ori Flomin and Donna Uchizono among others. His choreography in the U.S. and abroad at venues such as Dance Theater Workshop, Purchase College SUNY, Dixon Place, P.S. 122, Joe’s Pub, Saint Mark’s Church, Lexington for the Arts in New York, Bronx at BAAD!/Bronx Academy of Arts and Dance and Pregones Theater/Teatro Pregones. Antonio also taught nationally and internationally and is a certified body practitioner specializing in massage therapy, zero balancing, Reflexology, Watsu,Water dance and studying the Feldenkrais Method. Most recently, Antonio received a grant from the Edward and Sally Van Lier Fund through Movement Research and was nominated for this year’s United States Artist Fellowship. Elke Rindfleisch has created works with her group ‘Rindfleisch’ since 1999. Venues include the Ohio Theater/Ice Factory, Jacob’s Pillow Inside/Out, Danspace Project, Joyce SoHo, Lower Manhattan Cultural Council/Sitelines, and the company’s former home Wallabout Studio. She worked as a guest teacher/-choreographer at various places in Europe and the US, and has been awarded residencies at Mt. Tremper Arts, Künstlerhaus Lukas Ahrenshoop, and Dansehallerne Copenhagen. Elke has danced for various choreographers, most recently Kimberly Bartosik and the artist collective Magnetic Laboratorium. She holds a BA from the Danceakademie Rotterdam. Marilyn Maywald is a dancer based in New York City, originally from Nashville, TN (BFA Arizona State University). She dances with Vicky Shick, Melanie Maar, and Beth Gill, and has enjoyed extensive working relationships with Melinda Ring, Maggie Bennett, Steven Reker, and Yin Mei (company member Yin Mei Dance 2004-09), as well as projects with Katie Workum and Milka Djordjevich/Chris Peck. Her commercial credits include backup dancing for Reggie Watts, Naomi & Wynona Judd, and Shania Twain. Past incarnations of tonight’s solo were performed in February 2013 at Brooklyn Arts Exchange, and in Februrary 2010 at Danspace Project’s Food for Thought. Rain is a developing work that explores the state of the female mind after the spirit has been crushed. Like the monsoons, the liberator of the parched earth from the heat and drought, the woman is born a free spirit full of nurture. But with the ever-increasing subjugation of her spirit and body, we force ourselves to become sky watching rain birds….Asking…Where is the rain?
Rain is in response to the rise of rape incidents in India in recent times.

Award-winning choreographer and performer, Preeti Vasudevan is a leading exponent of classical Indian dance-theater Bharatanatyam creating new provocative, contemporary theater. Original works performed by her performing arts collaborative Thresh have earned international acclaim for their fresh juxtaposition of traditional dance-theater forms from her native India with modern theories of movement and expression. Composition, choreography and performance by Quartet Collective (Rachel Bernsen, Melanie Maar, Abraham Gomez-Delgado, Taylor Ho Bynum)

Quartet Collective (featuring Rachel Bernsen, Melanie Maar, Abraham Gomez-Delgado, and Taylor Ho Bynum) got together to experiment with doing and undoing music and dance in performance. Performing together in various music and dance venues over the past two years, the group practices spontaneous action as a way to experience and share composition and choreography in the moment, continuously seeking a collective consciousness as well as individual presence. Scores, principles, and structures are both developed and discarded, as the search for a trans-disciplinary understanding of risk and relationship, dialogue, and intention keeps this collective on its toes and ears. Quartet Collective will give a keynote performance and talk at the Stony Brook University Philosophy and Art Conference on March 30th. Past performances include The Vision Festival, The NOT Festival, The Poetry Project at St. Marks Church, Jalopy, The BIG ROOM’s Take Your Time series and internationally in Austria, Germany, and Holland.

Talya Epstein is originally from Sharon, Massachusetts and now resides in Brooklyn. Her performance pieces have been shown at Danspace Projectʼs Draftwork series, AUNTS, Dixon Placeʼs Body Blend series, The Tank, Galapagos Art Space, Bushwick Starr, and The Flynn Center for the Performing Arts, among others. She is currently engaged in creative processes with Maggie Jones, Melinda Ring, Tatyana Tenenbaum, and Larissa Velez-Jackson. Talya is a member of The Woods Cooperative in Ridgewood, Queens, where she rehearses. She holds a BFA from The Boston Conservatory and, currently, attends Janet Panetta’s ballet class whenever possible.

Coming from a visual art background, dancemaker Rebecca Bryant combines pre-determined and extemporaneous movement with text, video, sound, and objects to address current societal phenomena. In addition to solo work, she performs with Lower Left Performance Collective (dance/theater) and the Past Modern Performance Duo (dance/percussion/new media), and has danced with renowned and emerging choreographers including Nina Martin, Shelley Senter, Wally Cardona, Kim Epifano, Victoria Marks, Lionel Popkin, Liam Clancy, Marianne Kim, Randé Dorn, and Manuelito Biag. Bryant has performed across the US and in Canada, Mexico, Argentina, Spain, Germany, Hungary, Romania, Denmark, Norway, and Sweden, with projects supported by multiple residencies. Bryant currently resides in West Lafayette, Indiana where she is Assistant Professor of Dance at Purdue University.

Michal Samama is a New York Live Arts Fresh Tracks 2012-2013 Artist-in-Residence and a Movement Research 2011-2013 Artist-in-Residence. She was recently awarded a New Dance Alliance LiftOff Residency and participated in The Field Artist Residency. Since arriving to NYC in 2010, her work has been presented at Dixon Place, Movement Research at the Judson Church, Joyce SoHo, Chez Bushwick, Priska C. Juschka Gallery, First Street Green, Vaudeville Park, and the 92nd St Y. In Berlin she performed at the Home Sweet Home Festival and the Grimmuseum. In Israel her work has been shown in Suzanne Dellal Center, Tmuna Theater, Tzavta Theater, and more.

Inbal Hever is a mezzo soprano whose repertoire ranges from baroque to contemporary classical music. She has performed as a soloist in Europe, Israel, and, recently, New York.

This is the second time that Ann Sofie Clemmensen and Tammy Carrasco have collaborated together. In MODE they are revisiting movement material that they generated in their former collaboration (a group work). In reshaping the material into a duet, they are exploring how their relationship to the movements are changing, as the rearrangement of order, time, and intent solidifies the former into something new.

Ann Sofie Clemmensen is an emerging Danish choreographer. She will graduate with an MFA in Dance from Ohio State University in May 2013. Tammy Carrasco is a first year MFA student in the Ohio State University dance department of dance.

Kate Martel grew up in Massachusetts and Rhode Island. Currently based in Brooklyn, NY, she has danced in NYC since 2002. A member of Laura Peterson Choreography since 2007, Kate has performed dances by Luis Lara Malvacias, Juliette Mapp, David Hurwith, Sarah White-Ayon, and Nora Stephens. Abandoned classrooms, rooftops, blackbox theaters, and lofts have been homes to her choreographic experiments (St. Cecilia’s, Rooftop Dance, Dixon Place, and Women in Motion). She has taught nationally, internationally, and is currently on faculty at Western Connecticut State University. Having earned her B.A. in Dance from Goucher College, Kate is pursuing her M.F.A. at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. She is also participating in the Alexander Technique Teacher Training Course at Balance Arts Center. Big thanks, Whitney, for your collaboration!

Kanassu means ‘the craziest’ in Wolof language. Through dance and poetry, Kanassu denounces some of the evils found in African society, evils that hinder Africa.

Kanassu
He walks the streets, mind-wandering such as the poet
He denounces the evils of the society, such as the politician
Everywhere he sounds the alarm, such as the fireman
He keeps moving forward when everyone seems to stop
He wants, such as the great men, to transform the world.
But he is called Kanassu
Such as the poet and the politician
Such as the fireman and the great men
Who then is the fool among the fools?
He is in the streets, in offices
He is in the trash, in laboratories
Sometimes visible, sometimes invisible
You, me, all of us are Kanassu
The negligent and the careless
The pretentious and the crooks
The liars and the irresponsibles
The corrupted and the greedy
Intolerant religious and bellicose politicians
Are all Kanassu
Is it not the fools who hold the reins of the world?

Papa Sy is a dancer, a choreographer, and a dance teacher from Senegal. After professional dance training in Senegal’s national dance academies, Papa Sy joined Germain Acogny’s Ecole des Sables and the internationally known Jant-Bi dance company. Working at Ecole des Sables opened Papa Sy’s artistic spirit. He founded the Pasytef Ballet-Theatre de Dalifort dance company as well as the Pasy Dance School out of a passion for sharing his knowledge with young dancers and contributing to their artistic education. Papa Sy now lives in New York City and continues teaching dance classes to children as well as adults at Cumbe Diaspora Dance Center.
