SUNDAY PROCESS LAB with VANESSA ANSPAUGH
March 16 SUN 5-8pm $5
Eden’s Expressway, 537 Broadway
Archiving the present
This workshop considers movement-based performance as a tool for broadening ones own artistic practice. Starting from “now” we will explore the myriad understandings of presence. We will look to the sensorial, relational, personal, political, seasonal, annual etc. to uncover the layers of what constitutes “this moment.” Bringing the outside in and the inside out we will make a piece together in 3 hours. We will construct, compose, dismantle and play, coating layer upon layer to investigate the idea of “dance as a document” of our time spent together.

This Studies Project Discusses the relatively new and evolving phenomenon of a dramaturg as an active participant in the conceiving and making of movement-based works. Conceived as a two-part event, Dramaturgy as Practice/Dramaturgy in Practice speakers explored both the ontology and the workings of dance dramaturgy today. This second event brought together dramaturgs, choreographers and dancers to engage in an in-depth conversation on the experience, effect and possible implications of the presence of the dramaturg in the choreographic process.

Part 1 of the Dramaturgy Studies Project took place on May 5th 2013 and is available as a podcast at:

First Street Green.

This class is for those struggling with health issues of their own or that of a loved one. We use movement and somatic practices to support healing processes. Sourcing from both western and eastern traditions, we will play with movement, breath, sound and imagery to encourage self-empowerment as it relates to our health and well-being.

Sunday Process Lab with Anna Sperber.
Sunday October 6 5:00pm-8:00pm.
Movement Research at Eden’s Expressway, 537 Broadway, 4th Floor.
$5
Beginning with a practice of solo improvisations, of seeing and allowing ourselves to be seen; letting the internal logic of the body come to the forefront; dancing for and with each other as a method towards the development of an intimate understanding of each other’s physicality and imaginative identity, while asking how the material interfaces with the space as a compositional container. how do we respond to it? how do we fill it? We will make material and then make decisions that react to what has surfaced. We will repeat a focused cycle of action and reaction, watching for an identity to emerge.

Upcoming Workshop.

Authentic Movement with David Hurwith.
October 8-10 Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday  7-9pm.
October 12 Saturday 12-4pm.
Gibney Dance Center, 890 Broadway.
$75 Full workshop, $40 Saturday, $14 per class (Tue-Wed-Thu).
Authentic Movement
A witness and a mover agree to enter a mystery. The mover, with eyes closed, self-directed, explores impulses in the present moment. The witness with eyes open watches the movement and holds the intention to support the mover’s experience. Personal imagery, sensation, emotion and the ineffable emerge to consciousness with movement as the source. Authentic Movement provides a powerful context to discover meaning or non-meaning from experience and to retrieve seminal material for the artist. After moving and witnessing, a process of speaking, moving, drawing or writing recalls the experiences. The ritual has the intention of maintaining the internal efficacy of what just happened.

Classes this week with…

Joanna Kotze. Morning Class.
Monday, Wednesday, Friday. 10:00am-12:00pm. $14.
Movement Research at Edens Expressway, 537 Broadway, 4th Floor.

Beauty, awkwardness, form, strength, weakness. Intended to be both laboratory and class, the sessions will be time for us to delve into the design of the body and its potential within a given moment. Through stretch and placement, technique studies, movement phrases and open practices, habits will be discovered, challenged, and seen through a new lens. A concentration on the forces through the legs will lead to finding more range in separate body parts and ways to use weight into the floor. My hope is for you to feel present and challenged and to leave class with a few answers and more questions.

Vicky Shick. Morning Class.
Tuesday & Thursday. 10:00am-12:00pm. $14.
Danspace Project, 131 E. 10th Street.

Class will begin with systematically readying an alert body and mind for full-out and detailed dancing which we will do in the second part of class. The goal is to help each dancer increase awareness, level of articulation, strength, technical facility and focus. The warm up is simple and straightforward with an emphasis on alignment, physical mechanics, and space for sensation and feedback from our bodies as we work collaboratively to arrive at dancing. Through the practice of doing phrase work with a wide range of physicality and co-ordinations, we hone our skills and apply our training. And with repetition and exploration we educate ourselves and deepen the understanding of the intelligence in our bodies.

Levi Gonzalez. Morning Class.
Monday, Wednesday, Friday. 10:00am-12:00pm. $14.
Movement Research at Eden’s Expressway, 537 Broadway, 4th Floor.

No class May 27
Using the morning technique class structure as a model, this class will focus on dance as a physical, conceptual, and experiential practice, with an emphasis on the cultivation of presence inside of the forms. Class will begin with imagery and gentle preparation culled from various bodywork modalities that access our awareness of the organs, the skeleton, gravity, and energetic pathways through the architecture of the body and into the space. Class will expand into technical exercises, choreographic structures, improvisations, and performance constructs, exploring ways to engage with the material through precise and imaginative means. No class May 27.

Jennifer Nugent. Morning Class.
Tuesday & Thursday. 10:00am-12:00pm. $14.
Danspace Project, 131 E. 10th Street.

Using improvisational and set warm-ups, we will focus on the volume and weight inside the body and its relationship to the floor. Exercises that bring awareness to the feet, spine, and pelvic floor encourage the feeling of release in the limbs, allowing us to fall and suspend off-center, simultaneously finding a grounded flexible base of support. Using these physical tools, we will explore sensation, instinct, and the inherent musicality inside the body, phrasing. All the while dancing, we will work toward a more grounded and direct approach to movement.
