The Relational Body Project is a series of works performed in close proximity to the audience that explores the body as a relational entity. (Part One occurred as a Studio Series at New York Live Arts, Part Two was a multi-channel video installed at The New Museum/auntsforcamera, Part Three will occur on NYC sidewalks and train platforms in summer/fall 2015, and Part Four will be a culminating, staged performance in 2017.)

This Sunday Process Lab is concerned with my working methodologies that identify, multiply, and disrupt meaning in the moment. Using whatever faculties most readily available to the practitioner in real time–movement, speech, vocal toning, song, writing–we will research the ways in which forms can be in dialogue, competition, and support of one another. MULTIPLY YOUR MAKING CAPACITY OUT OF THIN AIR BY STAYING INSIDE THE EXPERIENCE AND SQUAWKING! Using my (non) fictional improvisation methodology, the Star Crap Method, we will place perception, action and meta-commentary on a horizontal plane and then bust out some hot material on that plane, like it’s a stage, tailored to the practitioner’s exact specifications.

She received the 2013 “Bessie” for Outstanding Emerging Choreographer, is a 2013 Movement Research AIR with recent residencies at Baryshnikov Arts Center, Djerassi and Bogliasco. Joanna danced with Wally Cardona for ten years and currently dances for Kimberly Bartosik. She has studied Klein Technique™ with Barbara Mahler since 2003 and has a BA in Architecture.

Kanassu means ‘the craziest’ in Wolof language. Through dance and poetry, Kanassu denounces some of the evils found in African society, evils that hinder Africa.

He walks the streets, mind-wandering such as the poet
He denounces the evils of the society, such as the politician
Everywhere he sounds the alarm, such as the fireman
He keeps moving forward when everyone seems to stop
He wants, such as the great men, to transform the world.
But he is called Kanassu
Such as the poet and the politician
Such as the fireman and the great men
Who then is the fool among the fools?
He is in the streets, in offices
He is in the trash, in laboratories
Sometimes visible, sometimes invisible
You, me, all of us are Kanassu
The negligent and the careless
The pretentious and the crooks
The liars and the irresponsibles
The corrupted and the greedy
Intolerant religious and bellicose politicians
Are all Kanassu
Is it not the fools who hold the reins of the world?

Papa Sy is a dancer, a choreographer, and a dance teacher from Senegal. After professional dance training in Senegal’s national dance academies, Papa Sy joined Germain Acogny’s Ecole des Sables and the internationally known Jant-Bi dance company. Working at Ecole des Sables opened Papa Sy’s artistic spirit. He founded the Pasytef Ballet-Theatre de Dalifort dance company as well as the Pasy Dance School out of a passion for sharing his knowledge with young dancers and contributing to their artistic education. Papa Sy now lives in New York City and continues teaching dance classes to children as well as adults at Cumbe Diaspora Dance Center.

EXPRESS TRAIN TO STATES OF GRACE: CI, contemplation, and composition
Like scaling Mt Everest, States of Grace is a pinnacle — elusive, ever-present, dangerous, fantasized, in our minds. And our bodies. “States of Grace” is what can happen when all the balls are in the air at once: solo dancing, contact improvisation, non-CI improvisation, contemplation, composition, listening, performance/art, mystery, and humanity. Many questions. Embodied research. Can we move easily between solo, contact improvisation, group work, somatic sources and impulses, and compositional awareness? What does this make? Only way to discover is to do it and find out. The Underscore on Sunday is the culminating vehicle for our discoveries. Participants should have previous experience with Contact Improvisation.

(Included in Nancy’s States of Grace workshop. There will be some places open for others to join just for the Underscore talk and practice.)
The Underscore is a long jamming/contact/improvisation/composition score that Nancy has been developing since the early 1990s as a framework for dance improvisation research. It guides dancers through a series of “changing states” — from solo relaxation and sensitizing to gravity and support, through group circulation and interaction, contact improvisation engagements, opening out to full group improvisation, and back to rest and reflection. Previous experience with Contact Improvisation and attendance at the talk is required for participation in the Underscore practice.

Taking the following as an ambitious base, we’ll try out various configurations in which we might think-act together what a community choreography could be, understanding the idea of community not in terms of difference from other groups but in terms of a specific way of being together.
Ten statements on collective practice*
1. members of the group participate with their entire bodies, experiences and thoughts
2. each member is responsible for what she shares within the group
3. each member is responsible for the way she processes what is shared within the group
4. short-cut negotiations
5. general agreement is not desirable
6. create a common that is based on individual experience
7. practitioners should focus on their own activity rather than on the general composition
8. only the practitioners themselves can evaluate their own activity
9. leave space for individuals to resist the group dynamics
10. don’t direct each other

Long time Forsythe dancer Elizabeth Corbett guides an exploration into the working methodologies inspired by the creative processes of William Forsythe. In this workshop dancers explore and develop improvisation approaches and deconstruction of Forsythe’s phrase work toward accessing the inner logic and unfolding mechanisms in the work.

Improvisation as a practice, and particularly the rich history of Contact Improvisation, has spread throughout the world in various permutations and with multiple offshoots, evolutions, hybrids, specializations, etc. With improvisation in some form or another as a now ubiquitous presence in much of contemporary dance, how are people grappling with the various practices of improvisation in the context of contemporary performance?
How do we situate our dancing in the larger world? Is it performance? Practice? Who is it for and how does it serve and/or inspire us and others? What tools and materials are we using — and toward what ends?

Beauty, awkwardness, form, strength, weakness. Intended to be both laboratory and class, we will delve into the design of the body and its potential within a given moment. Through open practices, stretch and placement, technique studies, and movement phrases, habits will be discovered, challenged, and seen through a new lens. A concentration on the forces through the legs will lead to finding the range in separate body parts and ways to use your weight into the floor. My hope is for you to feel present and challenged and to leave class with a few answers and many more questions.

Movement Practice
The class will begin with an anatomy focused warm-up, drawn from both traditional and recent techniques, aiming to align and re-pattern the energy flow in the body in order to find support from the floor and our connection into space. We will begin with simple movements, improvisation scores, exercises, and sequences gradually building in complexity. We will learn movement material, some from Jasperse’s work and some created for these explorations. Our goal will be to integrate energetic patterning explored in the first portion of class and to play with different manners of experiencing and embodying the choreographic material.

Workshop in Performance
What are we talking about when we focus on “performance”? Consciousness? Being, doing, enacting, responding, connecting? This workshop is designed to expand your knowledge, skills, experience, and strategies for performance. Geared for dance practitioners, the work draws on different modes of live performance, across disciplines. The two days are structured around a sequence of explorations, performance, reflective actions and discussion. Please bring in 1-3 minutes of your material for starters.

Taking two everyday forms of movement, we will allow these forms to disorganize within, and to be disorganizing of, our bodies. This process will lead us into understandings of function and form and also into expressive potentials that arise within experimental states of disorder. As we explore in solo, duet, and ensemble improvisations, moving periodically in contact and/or with eyes closed, the lines between states of order and disorder will be at times stark and at others blurred. The sensations that arise within this unstable and unbound matrix range from relaxing to energizing, from disorienting to freeing.

There Are No Stepbrothers in Dance
I think the statement “there are no stepbrothers in dance” is a paraphrase of something Balanchine said. His point was that one could only say so much in a dance, and yet what a dance can convey is particular and specific to the medium. In this workshop, we will look at the limitations and strengths of the medium in order to become more exact in our choreographic choices and in order to elicit more clarity from the contexts of meaning we create. Bring 3-10 minutes of a complete choreographic work to be presented live either with you as a solo performer or invite your performers. We will also work on developing some specific tools through compositional exercises. Be prepared to also read, talk, debate, listen, and imagine aloud.

An Eco-poetic Approach to Dance Improvisation and Performance
In this movement workshop we will explore awareness and intention through the development of perceptual acuity in relationship to our inner and outer landscapes. We will examine the delicate relationships between our poetic imagination and our sensory systems. The basis of my approach is that composition and performance are ecologically rooted acts. Our imagination grows from where and how we exist. Movement, story, image and gesture are imbedded in the relationships that are evolving all around us. Come ready to dance, perceive, perform and imagine.

Touch Move Talk Write: open studio practices
This workshop focuses on generating new practices through touching, moving, talking, and writing. We will shape each practice with simple rules and apply different sequences and durations, giving equal time to all four aspects. By pushing the notion of practice to extremes, one begins to understand assumptions about style, body, self, technique, unspoken rules, expertise, etc. etc… The aim is to proliferate unexpected results, to try many things quickly, and to foment revolution. Please don’t come without a notebook and a pen.

Improvisational “Scores”
In this workshop we will investigate my improvisational technique which I call “Scores.” “Scores” are essentially words, containing images, that we will learn to possess our bodies from head to toe. “Scores” can be physical, emotional, psychological or spiritual. Some “Scores” will possess different body parts. Some “Scores,” which I call “no-no scores,” explore socially-unaccepted content. We will allow these “no-no scores” to travel through the subconscious revealing to us our true opinions about them. We will utilize Releasing Technique in the warm ups revealing to us the capability to fill our “empty” bodies with images. Authentic movement, as a warm up, will guide us through powerful qualities.

We’ll awaken the brain and the body, learn by expansion rather than concentration, rigorously attend to the present and learn precise, task-oriented, simple and complex movement phrases.

Movement Research at Eden’s Expressway
This workshop looks at some of the ways in which Miguel Gutierrez approaches a practice of movement and improvisation in his work. Working from the proposition that dance is a mode of perceptual inquiry, and working against the idea of dance as a non-verbal “language,” students will be led through a series of movement explorations that prioritize sensation, non-rational action, and that trigger automatic, unprepared physical response. Some of the questions that guide this workshop are: What does movement “do” and how does it operate as a framework for complicated, nuanced, embodied meaning?

$825 for 3 full weeks (9 workshops, a savings of $255)

Individual workshops cost $115-$130.

Jin Ju Song-Begin is a choreographer, dancer and dance teacher from Seoul, Korea. Her work has been performed in Korea, Japan and the USA. She frequently collaborates with composers and uses live music for performances. She is currently dancing in NYC with several choreographers including the Sean Curran Dance Company. She will show an evening of her works at the Center for Performance Research on April 17th.
